MCT Oil Water Fast + 2 hour bike ride everyday possible?

#1

I’ve completed 2 3 day water fasts and have lost some weight doing it.

My new goal is to complete a 7 day water fast while biking every day for atleast 2 hours a day, which is what I’m currently doing but I am still eating around ~500 calories a day.

I purchased MCT oil and I’ve heard it will not break the fast, so could I consume a serving of MCT oil before I ride my bike and still be fasting and in ketosis? The reason for the MCT oil is that biking is pretty hard and I wouldn’t like to pass out while riding the bike

Current weight is 163 but I do lose weight pretty fast while fasting.
My goal is 150, I don’t mind being hungry I just dont want to pass out while riding my bike and actually get to 150, which is where I look the best.

Um.

Fasting is sort of flexibly defined. Some people have a few calories of mct or hwc, some have coffee or tea and some don’t, some do bone broth. MCT shouldn’t throw you out of ketosis - although it may give you a mighty case of the runs.

But … I’m sorry, I want to be supportive, but everything else you’re saying sounds more like an eating disorder than a lifestyle change. Keto is a long term way of eating to promote health, and violent exercise to the point where your body is totally pushed to its limits while fasting is definitely not something that seems in keeping with a healthy plan. 500 calories a day is not really fasting or healthy keto eating, it’s calorie deprivation that may actually lead to muscle loss or a metabolic slowdown.

Is there any way we could help you on a … kinder, gentler road to the person you want to become?

How long have you been doing Keto? Are you fat adapted yet? MCT oil is a fat. It will not through you out of ketosis, carbs will. And protein if too much.
I agree with Karen. There’s a difference between fasting and calorie deprivation. Fasting shouldn’t hurt your metabolism the way that calorie deprivation will. But if you’re in the 500 calorie range, that’s no longer fasting.
And if you are fat adapted, fasting shouldn’t hurt exercise as long as you keep your electrolytes up. You should be able to tap into your body’s fat stores for energy.
I read that any drink consumption should be under 50 calories to still be fasting.

Just curious - if you’re still talking to me after the intense CICO debate  - do you max out your workouts or runs while fasting? I read somewhere that at a certain point your body can’t keep up with the intensity and will start breaking down muscle, but I really haven’t done any research on that and I don’t remember if the source was credible.

I do my runs fasted. I found out the hard way that anything fatty undigested will cause me to become nauseous while running. And I’m not about to “carb up.”

I have been following marathon runners and an ultra runner (100+ miles) who run completely or almost completely fasted. The most I’ve done is 10k, but I’m pretty sure I could do a lot further than that fasted. I’ve signed up for a half marathon in August and I plan on doing it fasted.

I’m not too concerned about it. I may pack a couple things like macadamia nuts or something just in case, but I don’t plan on using them unless I really need to. And I’m going to do all my training fasted too.

Thanks. I should have specified: do you mean fasted as in you have an empty stomach, or do you mean fasted as in you haven’t eaten for four days? I’m looking specifically at the OP, who wants to do intense workouts during a 7 day water only fast and wondering if her/his ketone production can keep up with that, even with an MCT oil boost.

I haven’t made it anything more than a OMAD, and only then a couple times a week.

Still not to any point to be able to EF. I don’t have much desire to do it, but I’m not opposed either. If it happens naturally, I’ll embrace it. Otherwise no.

So typically I run in the morning or early afternoon and my last meal would have been the evening before. And no carbing up during that meal.
