McDonalds

Some interesting news today that the said company has withdrawn from the sponsorship of the IOC. This means no longer are they a key Olympic sponsor.

They said they did it for ‘commercial’ reasons but I see it as far more positive than that in their have a failing business model and younger people interested in the Olympics are far more food savvy !

I have no issue with mcdonalds really. They will gladly change the order if you ask. No bun… water… salad with bacon and hamburger patty.
Mom worked there 2 times - last year and before she entered the air force. Said they treated people very well and were always instructed to follow special requests.

It is just that the bulk of people want buns, full sugar soda, and shakes. They dont make people order it.

Some people are food purists, wanting only organic, locally sourced, free range, even specifically eschewing corporations.

That’s great. And if “the young people are more food savvy” that’s great too.

I agree with @siobhan. McDonald’s has 100% beef and dairy only cheese, and perfectly healthy salads though not organic.

These low carb choices are also affordable and easily attainable. This is why I support fast food giants. They aren’t all garbage food. They can have a very decent place in a healthy low carb diet.

(hopefully no one is still buying into the false information of soy in burgers and “plastic” hydrogenated cheese).
I’ve done my research and those are myths .

“Commercial reasons” can mean many things.
I would be glad if “our young people” are being more food conscious, but they can be food savvy right at the McDonald’s that exist now, by making better choices there

(ianrobo) #4

all that is correct but they market and suck people into the crap stuff … if you want healthy food you don’t go into them do you ?

Fact they sponsor sport has always been a bi bone of contention and they are struggling as younger consumers are so better consumer savvy

(Tom Seest) #5

This is the case with every grocery store too but I refuse to give up buying the good stuff because they push the bad.

(Siobhan) #6

They dont suck people in they market what research shows people want.
The market influences them. If people turn around and all want keto they will 100% provide

If I want something keto and am on the road and in a rush? Yes I will absolutely get mcdonalds and I will be given exactly what I ask for

100% real beef
real cheese
real bacon

It is just food

Bulk of people want SAD so they sell SAD
Someone wants keto type food theyll give it to you

I see this more as the Olympics arent drawing enough viewership to warrant the IOC’s sponsorship costs… moreso than young people becoming food savvy. If the viewership numbers were what they once were, or if the IOC would negotiate a better sponsorship rate, they’d be back in an instant.

Advertising is about creating awareness and putting the company into the customers consideration set. When you decide you are hungry, advertising should make it so when you think of the food around you, McDonalds is at least one of your options. Nothing advertisers do will ever make anyone purchase their products, only consider them.

(ianrobo) #8

sure but if McD’s are everywhere it helps and if they are changing then great but sales figures are not showing this and esp the US

I agree when it comes to the tiny young children, though fast food giants are morphing towards healthier choices in “happy meals”, it isn’t happening fast enough.
Point though: their adult caretakers are making that choice for them, and buying the carbs for them.

When it comes to grown adults getting “sucked into the crap stuff” I do not agree. A mature adult makes a choice. Saying they are “sucked in” is as ludicrous as the person who tried to sue the fast food giants for his poor health. SMDH.

Yes. I do. This may be where you and I differ on what we feel is healthy, and that’s ok. I respect your values. I was actually going to order a McDonald’s McDouble Quad tonight for my single IF meal. I’m going to be hungry later, as today is lift day and I’ve been lifting heavier than ever. (My free weight leg press is up to 700 lbs!)
The McDonald’s McDouble Quad fits my protein requirements perfectly, coming in at just under 70 grams protein. The American cheese slices (there will be four) add up to 6 grams carbohydrate, so that’ll be it for carbs for me today(I keep to net 5). Luckily their American cheese slices don’t contain whey or seed oils. Just milk and cream.

To use their nutrition calculator, bring up a particular food and its components, and simply delete all but the part you want specifics on. Such as the cheese. Then the nutrition will only reflect that. All parts of all food items list total ingredients too.
See McDonald’s nutrition calculator HERE:

Wow @tdseest
This is an EXCELLENT point. Thank you. I actually never looked at it this way before!

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #12

Oh wait. Before I go you guys . THIS. My McDonald’s McDouble Quad. You’re welcome.

No wonder you have to pump iron. It’s the only way you can lift that thing.

(ianrobo) #14

see thats fine of course for us, no carbs etc …

But we are empowered consumers, we read the labels, understand why they make the buns addictive. As you say @Brenda the quality debate is different and I certainly do not eat all grass fed beef as it is too damn expensive !

However we are not their main market s you say it is the kids, pester power etc …

(Siobhan) #15

You could say that about any restaurant or store though…
They sell that stuff because people want it. People want it because they arent aware of the extent of the damage carbs cause.
It is not the restaurants fault.
If mcdonalds suddenly switched to all keto, high fat food, and tried to keep their image they would go out of business because the market is not ready for it yet.

Also general trends are showing sugar and margarine consumption is going down and butter sales are on the rise. So the market IS changing.
Maybe not very fast but thats life.

I find it weird that you talk about genpop like they have no agency. Many are aware mcdonalds is unhealthy (althoufh not for the right reasons) they choose to eat it anway. That’s their choice.

It isnt mcdonalds making kids eat happy meals, its the parents ultimately choosing to buy it for them. Because they dont know the bulk of what they are doing tk their kids. Change knowledge of genpop, change trends, and mcdonalds will change too. Already have (apple slices instead of french fries for example).

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #16

They have had baby carrots as a choice too!

(Adam L) #17

Holy Shit! that’s 3 of me & probably 4 or 5 Ronald McDonald’s - depending on how insulin sensitive Ron is these days & how often he says “hold the fries and the buns on my McDoubles”

(Thao Le) #18

Should of make McD pay for this mouth watering picture!

The middle aisles of the grocery stores are filled with metabolism-challenging processed foods. This doesn’t deter me from shopping there, though.

Here’s an example of a deconstructed Big Mac…if you take the components of this famous MacDonald’s burger, and arrange them differently on a plate, no red warning flags are triggered by the common citizen:

I can get keto at Walmart or wholefoods… Which place is my Dollar going farther? Same thing with McDonald’s or Five Guys… We must make the best choices not only for our health but our financial stability…
