McDonald's addict loses almost 100 pounds without giving up McNuggets

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #1

This is really humbling. Humiliating, really. The sacrifices we all made to adopt the super restricted keto diet, giving up all our favourite foods to eat low-carb drech. This chick just switched to the McNuggets 6 pack from the 20 pack and dropped 90 pounds. That proves beyond all doubt that keto sucks. We have been mislead by keto hucksters.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. < /sarc >

[Update / Edit] Literally the article title is true, but misleading. The woman did a lot more than simply substitute McNuggets 6 packs for 20s. Much of what she did was way more intelligent than you might think just reading the title and the first few paragraphs. No, she did not go keto, but she dropped a lot of carbage she had been eating exclusively and started eating more nutritious food overall and less of it. She adopted 16/8 IF and although she reduced overall caloric intake 50%, she still ate about 1500 calories per day. So she seems to have avoided the CICO trap of slowing her metabolism. Who knows whether or not she maintains the loss over time or reverts again to the overeating carbage that got her into trouble. I doubt we’ll see a followup if she reverts to her previous eating and regains the weight and then some. Oh, yeah, she still eats McNuggets only not so much. I sincerely hope she is smart enough to learn from her experience.

<chorus of mainstream nutritionists and registered dieticians>:

“It’s just calories in and calories out.”

“The only thing wrong with sugar and white flour is that it’s ‘empty calories’”

“There are no ‘bad’ foods … Any food can fit into a balanced diet … It’s just a matter of portion control.”

Now now fellas, my mom did the same thing, and had the same results… After her gastric bypass.

(PSackmann) #4

Reading pasts the headlines, she attributes the loss to a 16:8 eating plan, removing most junk food and adding vegetables. She’s still eating starches, but a lot less than she was. My youngest has lost about 15 pounds this summer just by reducing his eating times, it is a viable option to reduce some of the insulin levels that cause weight gain and inflammation. Not full-on Keto, give her time and I think she’ll get there

(Bunny) #5

…because she probably is not over-eating them and that’s all she is eating and the fact McNuggets contain organ meats and one actual sliver of real chicken??

You can dam near keto any processed or highly refined food, just don’t eat too much of it!

Not very nutritious though?

(PSackmann) #6

According to the article, she went from consuming 20 daily to consuming 6 occasionally. Her change is all about improving food quality and restricted eating windows, the headline tells another story.

(Bunny) #7

…And she is pumping iron/lifting weights? …She’s oxidizing the breading on those McNuggets?

Anyone can eat x number of calories a day and lose tons of weight --it is not sustainable is all --I am living proof of this. I have yo-yo dieted for so many years -was underweight and starving for many years 11-20ish-anorexia/bulimia-addicted to purging/laxatives/diet pills, then a combination of all that and yo-yo dieting until I found Keto in February. If I had an event that was important, I could always easily drop 40 pounds or more (I just didn’t eat or I did a combo of the things I just mentioned). I lost about 40 pounds 6 weeks before our wedding (and gained back lots over our honeymoon).

I lost over 100 pounds in 8 months from 2002-2003 – but I gained it all back and more – losing weight on a very restrictive diet is easy, although it messes up your metabolism over time, and then even starving yourself stops working (case in point, my 2.5 month stall this summer) when I was Fasting lots, and eating 1000 or less Keto calories, low carb, often 10 grams or less -and didn’t lose anything).

I wonder how long this lady will keep the weight off, until she gains it all back, or even more. I find that usually that is what happens to most people is all. That is why Keto is so liberating and awesome, we have so many people on the forum that can have kept it off and are happy, healthy and not feeling deprived or starving -this is an awesome WOE to me, and I just wish I had of found it years ago =).

Nope, she just got the courage to join a gym. She has significantly reduced her carb intake, and reduced her insulin levels by restricted eating windows. Showing you don’t have to be hard core to get results

(PSackmann) #10

Good question. Since she is mainly using a 16:8 eating pattern, she may keep her insulin levels low enough to heal her metabolism. If she’s in ketosis, then her eating pattern is ketogenic, whether it aligns with what the site members consider ketogenic or not. There are many paths to ketosis.

It’s wonderful that you read past the headline and examined the mechanics.

(Full Metal KETO AF) #12

McNuggets are one of the few items at McD’s that doesn’t contain HFCS. And I wouldn’t be so quick to judge if she’s doing this as a lifestyle change and not as a weight loss diet. It’s a vast improvement over her previous eating. Maybe down the road it backfires but it’s working for now. People have lost weight and kept it off without KETO, we just don’t like talking about it because we’re all KETO Zealots!

:joy::joy::grin::cowboy_hat_face:

(Full Metal KETO AF) #13

Says the KETO/Junk Food addict. I do seem to remember your love of KFC, pizza and orange soda! :joy::cowboy_hat_face:

(Jack Bennett) #14

Agreed … any step in the right direction is better than no step.

(hottie turned hag) #15

Headlines always piss me off :grimacing:

(Ken) #16

This story ranks right up there with Jared eating Subway every day and losing weight.

If sure you could eat wedding cake every day and lose weight within the right lifestyle context.

(Justin) #17

I’m new to any type of online forum. I joined because I love the keto way of life, carbs are like an addictive drug… Having said that, I’m surprised how serious some people take themselves. I believe the fun poking was not directed at the individual in the article but the way the article was written. Common since dictates if you have 20 nuggets and you subtract 14 of them and then join a gym so you can have a better background to take selfies then say… CrispyCream, good things are going to happen. Where is the newsworthiness? Are we allowed to say how stupid that article is?

(Bob M) #18

Those those people aren’t us…or we wouldn’t be here.

@Just10_Doeskins Feel free to say how stupid that article is, since it is (and I just read the headline).

(Karen) #19

I’m confused… Did you mean that your mom lost weight because with her gastric bypass she had reduced calories? I have a friend who had a gastric bypass and as a result has reduced her calories and has lost a great deal of weight. Will she be able to maintain this? Not sure

(Justin) #20

I was being sarcastic. My mom did have the surgery and lost weight but she refused to give up orange juice and empty calories. To me it was a squandered opportunity. My faith dictates that I can’t undergo that type of unnecessary operation. Will power is my dilemma but I’m not going under the knife to solve the problem. My point was there are alot of people who have the surgery and don’t tell anyone because they are ashamed. So when you ask them " how did you loose all that weight?" The tell you how they would have done it if they had the will power. ie. Eat nothing but potatoes for a year… Well maybe… what won’t work for me, might work for the next. I’ve learned not to believe everything I read. There is always more to the story than some news article cares to devuldge. They give the highlight reals. If a joker doesn’t mention “by the grace of God” or talk about how difficult it was or even mention the struggle, then I don’t accept they are being honest. If you hire a personal trainer and and take phen phen but fail to talk about it, cause you want people to think more highly of you then they should that’s your choice but don’t hate on me for being cynical.
