MAYO review

(Karen) #1

I know we have seen some Sir Kensington avocado oil mayo on a subject line. I wanted to try two others. The Sir Kensington has cane sugar.

Primal Kitchen Avocado Mayo available at Natural Grocery and Whole Foods, although not at my Whole Paycheck. $5.68 on sale
And
Chosen Foods Avocado Mayo available at Walmart $6.88 regular price?

Primal - Strong flavor, I kind of like it. Sharp tasting. Not Helman’s but not soybean either. Fluffy and spreadable.

Chosen Foods - More like Miracle whip, likely because of the sugar down the list.

C: 0, although I’d count 1 if you use a bunch.
P: 0
F: 11, must be more water in it

Both good, depending on your use

Just got some avocado oil at the store last week. Thinking of trying to make my own. We don’t use a whole lot of it but still would like to know what’s in it.

Neither of the ones you mention are ones I’ve seen in any of our stores here. But I know even Walmarts in different locations have different stuff.

I tried a couple of those and decided that making my own is the way to go. It is similar to this recipe

I use a mix of oils 1/2 cup avocado oil and 1/2 cup EVOO instead of the light olive oil since I don’t use that. You could also sub 1/2 cup of bacon fat for the avocado oil if you’re into that sort of thing. If you don’t have an immersion blender (really???) you can use a food processor and just pour the oil mixture slowing into the little tube with the hole in the bottom of it, that is why that hole is located there.

I also use this as a base for blu cheese dressing, mayo, some avocado oil, and blu cheese to taste, blended together. Warning addictive stuff.

Show me your oils!

Making your own mayo is absurdly easy. Use a 16oz size chip dip container. Crack an egg into it. Take a cup of whatever oil you choose, I often use several types for specific flavors (ex. a touch of sesame oil provides a nice accent) and dribble it in while blending with a stick blender. Dribble slowly to create the emulsion. I also add herbs, and other spices. I like tarragon when I’m using it on beef, and it is easier and keeps better than Bearnaise sauce. Lemony mayo is very tasty on cold chicken. Sweet, fruity mayo, or even a Char Siu flavor are awesome on pork.

I’ve tried chosen foods avocado mayo and didn’t like the taste not at all Hellmans, I also tried Hellmans organic mayo and didn’t like that either. Tastes nothing like the original. It had a similar taste to the avocado but seemed even stronger. :disappointed:

I am scared to try another because both times the taste is overwhelming and can’t be hidden in a recipe. It literally changed the “normal” flavor of the recipe when I used them.

May eventually resort to making my own.
