Heading to maui in a couple weeks for vacation. Obviously, being keto makes things hard, but we can manage. Any suggestions for a keto-friendly luau with nonpork items that are also keto friendly? We don’t eat pork.
Maui Luaus Compatible?
You should look at the menu before making reservations. The menu is going to vary depending on where you go.
There are some foods traditionally served at Luaus which would be good choices. Chicken, fish (lomi lomi salmon, ahi poke, and local fresh fish), sometimes seaweeds in various presentations, often there are fresh veggies served.
There will be a lot of carby sides: rice, noodles, sweet potato, poi (it’s actually really good when fresh and not sour), pineapple, mango, papaya, salads with sweetened dressings and often topped with crunchy noodles, Hawaiian style bread is really sugary. The touristy drinks are all sugar bombs. Traditional dessert is haupia–a sort of coconut solid pudding, but it’s highly sweetened and full of cornstarch. Sometimes you can get a young coconut and scoop out the meat, which is delicious and tender.
In maui, there don’t seem to be a TON of luaus. The best seems to be https://www.oldlahainaluau.com from the menu posted. The closest one to our hotel (at the hotel) doesn’t even post the menu!
Edit: that one seems all booked up for our week
