Malitol

Is there any connection between Malitol and causing hunger?

I’ve been fasting 20/4 for the last 2 weeks and 16/8 before that. I’m accustomed to going my entire fasting period without feeling hungry.

This morning I ate two Russel chocolate peanut butter cups sweetened with malitol and stevia leaf extract.
2g net carbs for 2 peanut butter cups.

Ate like normal the rest of the day and nothing I ate satiated me.
I felt like I could eat an entire cow all day long.
In fact, I threw in a 3rd meal at 8pm, 2 hours after my eating window expired because I was so hungry.

Is the Malitol doing this or is this just a coincidence?

A lot of people would say it is no coincidence. Maltitol is one of the worst sweeteners, has an insulin response (unlike the stevia) but unfortunately appears in the cheap, mass market “sugar free” items.
It’s a shame because it puts even more foods off limits. Luckily, more and more sugar free items are being made without Maltitol or Sorbitol (another bad one) but they are typically more expensive that the ones with the bad sugar alcohols.

There are good sugar alcohols like Xylitol and Erythritol so they’re not all bad.

I have some sugar free treats with this ingredient and I eat them in small doses. I’ve noticed zero side effects and no adverse effects on my weight loss progress, but then again I’ll just have one piece of sugar free candy a day (for example).

Interesting. Makes me wonder if it’s a confidence or if I react differently to the Malitol.
May wait a couple days and try again.
If it happens again I will have my answer

Atkins bars sugar alcohols

It’s just evil in so many ways. Totally messes up the whole digestive system and blood sugar & insulin… just don’t inflict that on yourself.

That was an interesting video…the xylitol was unexpected.

I don’t use it cause i have a dog.

We have erythritol, stevia, and monk fruit fiber in the pantry.

The Russel Stover chocolates do tend to make me have cravings. I can’t have those in the house or I will eat the entire bag. I don’t feel triggered like that from just stevia.

I know maltitol syrup has a HIGHER glycemic index than regular sugar.

Maltitol breaks down into (roughly) 50% sorbitol and 50% sugar (25% fructose, 25% glucose). Sorbitol can further break down into 50% glucose. This usually happens down stream and partially by bacteria, hence the disaster pants problem some people have with maltitol.
