I’m off to Penang soon with work, can anyone recommend keto friendly options for Malaysian food or help with keto vocabulary? Am struggling to find an online language course for Malay, so far have only found Indonesian which I believe is close but… plus I only have a few weeks, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Malaysia help please
That’s the really stinky one isn’t it? Think I’d give that a miss even if keto friendly.
Husband (Malaysian heritage) Says that satay should be ok just watch the peanut sauce.
You probably wont find much pork (except maybe in chinese restaurants).
Fish/seafood should be fine. Chili crab/ pepper crab.
Probably lots of chicken too just avoid the rice that will be everywhere…
Lots of stir fried green veg should be available too.
Don’t forget to enjoy yourself!
Fab, thanks Mark, does hubby have any vocab help? I hate going places and not knowing at least the basics (and now any keto phrases).
Yeah when I was in Malaysia a lot of the places we stayed had signs forbidding durian. We tried it and didn’t mind it, although also didn’t find it anything special.
Most people will speak English as its part of the school curriculum there.
I know but don’t want to be one of those people that doesn’t know the basics at least.
Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia are pretty much the same language. It’s about where it originated on an island between Sumatra and West Malaysia. Like someone from Louisiana talking to someone from NYC. I lived in Indonesia for a while and was married to an Indonesian woman so I speak some.
Thanks David, so learning Indonesian on duolingo would help? I “think” I’ve got thank you, yes, no, my name is, I managed a few bits in Thai, Cambodian, Chinese & Mongolian when travelling but will be in Penang for 9 months so want to learn more than the basics.
I have also found a lot of “kopitiam’s” are happy enough to replace noodles with shirataki noodles if you bring them.
Am worried about my usual excessive use of expletives, will have to curb that, don’t want to shock/offend/teach them new words.
