Magic Champagne

(Liz) #1

On every other weekend I’ll go to a party and let myself drink. I keep my carbs down for the whole day, eat a McDonald’s burger patty with cheese before the event, and then murder a bottle of champagne.
I can do this and stay in Ketosis and lose probably a pound and a half through a very scientifically named bodily process called actual goddamn magic.

Is there anyone that can account for a reason why alcohol actually doesn’t inhibit weightloss like this? Cause it’s not like I’m breaking it down on the dance floor, and getting in some party type cardio… partio?

Anyone else who has experienced this phenomenon, please stand up, please stand up.

Liz, I attribute it to having gained some metabolic flexibility and better hormonal balance from eating ketogenically (and in my case, fasting). That bottle of champagne is probably around 570 calories, total, and there are not enough carbohydrates to completely turn things around - knock you out of ketosis and especially reverse much or any of the past gains you’ve made. My opinion.

For 5 or 6 months I went beyond “lazy keto” into really crappy, hardly-ever-strict keto, and I still managed to lose 5 lbs. over that period, despite fears that I’d “gain it all back.” I think this was because during the prior 6 months I’d really been hard into keto and fasting.

As far as “magic” - I only gained 5 lbs per year, practically forever, before becoming diabetic and scared enough to change, even though there were a vast number of weeks in there that should have been a 5 lb weight gain.

I’ve had similar experiences, where instead of gaining it actually has seemed to break a stall. In fact, I’m hoping for that to happen today as I’m currently on my way to one of my favorite breweries.

One note however, depending on how you test/measure ketones, alcohol will create false positives. Nothing I generally worry about, just a heads up that a pee stick after a night of drinking will show raging ketones, but it’s actually just the alcohol

I should clarify, my experience is on the alcohol side, I don’t dance. I’ve tried a few times, but the people I’m with generally request I stop.

It’s because alcohol is processed by the body quickly. The common saying is that your body considers it a poison, so it gets rid of it as soon as possible. IMO it’s somewhere in between a macro and a micro nutrient, as it does provide calories, but like fat, the body has no ability to store it temporarily, like when carbs are converted to glycogen.

Either way, pretty much all it does is suspend lipolysis, which is resumed when the alcohol is burned. It is a diuretic, so some weight loss after drinking may be due to dehydration. To avoid dehydration causing hangovers, I recommend one glass of water between drinks.

I also recommend “Kir Royale”.

Alcohol is also very dehydrating. Coupled with being fat adapted and not having the alcohol affect you as much as it otherwise would, you could also be weighing less due to dehydration. At least in part.

Pre Keto I noticed I would lose weight after a lot of drinking. Which would happen about once every three years.

This applies to the Italian version of Magic Prosecco too!

Costco’s always got a great deal on it, and when I have a bottle waiting in the fridge, it’s as if a celebratory event could happen AT ANY MOMENT

Interestingly though, overall, even at $7 a bottle I’ve spontaneously reduced my bubbly intake a bit over the last year since going keto, I guess cos I feel more connected to my ‘inner bubbly"? Am definitely still very much a foodie, just feel an indescribable, je ne sais quoi feeling of deeper satiation via nourishment without bread n’ pasta, etc. One goblet with a meal and I’m quite satiated with bubbly… so, I’ve gotten better at saving any leftover bottle and been happily surprised that it works quite well the next night as a white wine, sadly with only a couple little bubbles, LOL.

I believe alcohol, per se, does not have carbs in it. It’s the other stuff in alcoholic beverages that has a varying amount of carbs and calories. Champagne doesn’t have many extra carbs, most of the grape juice has been converted to alcohol.

Did you know Costco sells more wine than anyone else worldwide?

We also sell more hotdogs every year than every single Major League Baseball Park in the country combined.

Sorry, couldn’t help going all Costco… I do new hire orientations and it’s part of my tour/speech.

That’s a great tasting bottle of wine, btw. :wine_glass:

I used to be a major contributor towards that stat

It is probably the best deal in the store. Though I haven’t had one in a while either. Even in my carb days, I preferred the pepperoni pizza.

Or the chicken bake… damn it @Anniegirl9, I’m trying to be good this weekend

Ok weird snowflake here. After drinking the next morning my pee stick shows no ketones. Interesting. And I thought that generally drinking wine would kick you out.

Wow! Those are SOME stats! In addition to Costco’s living wages and employee care. How wonderful that you do new hire orientations with your keto radiance & brainz - I bet it helps new employees a lot!

As a customer, I always feel kinda lost and a li’l anxious in warehouse stores when I go for large gathering trips - and I sure appreciate the maturity and genuine service of Costco employees who manage to make the stores cosier and less daunting to us mere mortals :purple_heart:

I’m also really appreciative of Costco’s deal on lamb and coconut oil and and and, I could go on!

Hahah. I loved that quote. Lets go Partio!

That’s it. I am going to buy wine at Costco tonight. I love Costco, but never think to buy my wine from there.

I often hit a new low after an evening of booze. I always put it down to dehydration, but really prefer ‘actual goddamn magic.’ :grinning:
