Made it through Day 1 of Dairy Free

(Ashley Haddock) #1

I decided to omit dairy :disappointed_relieved: for awhile to see if it would help with my 3 month (so far) plateau. I made it ok but I REALLY miss cheese and cream. :frowning: And I realized tonight I probably chose a really bad week to do this because of Mother’s Day weekend. We will be going out to eat both days, once will be at an Italian restaurant. Sigh.

How long are you planning to go without dairy?

I’m not sure. I’m playing it by ear. Having a stressful day today and really struggling. It’s amazing how powerful food is. Cheese has always been my go-to so it’s hard fighting that. Feels similar to when I was breaking my carb and Coke addiction.

Maybe having an end point goal would help? I dunno. Without an end point goal, no matter what day you break away from dairy-free will feel like a ā€œfailā€. With an end point goal, you reach it, and then not feel like a failure. At least, that’s how my brain and psyche works…obviously, we aren’t all the same. I hope you find success either way :grinning:

That’s a very good point. I hadn’t put an ā€œend dateā€ on it because I was waiting to see how my body reacts, but your reasoning makes sense.

I looked at the menu for the Italian restaurant we are going to on Sunday (where I used to get an amazing calzone or fettuccine) and they have a chicken dish that sounds really good and perfectly keto, but has cheese. I may allow myself that if I do well the rest of the week.

That sounds like a fantastic plan. That way you reach goals, and you reward yourself for reaching them.

Thank you! I appreciate the helpful feedback.

Watching you closely!!! I love cheese. I do HWC in my coffee, but if you gave me a choice, I would happily omit the HWC to keep my cheese. :cheese: :rat:

Going on day 3, doing ok so far! I found a great replacement for HWC in my afternoon fraps in coconut cream! So good! I still really miss cheese though. LOL

I will add it’s a lot easier to hit my macros accurately and I am eating less overall. I’m sure that’s a good thing, but I’m still also bummed. Hahaha

I am trying to be 100% dairy free (mixed success).

I make my own coconut milk yogurt and just made my first batch of coconut cream cheese (turned out pretty good).

I also make some nut and vegetable based ā€œcheesesā€ which are pretty decent, and sometimes I just sprinkle some nutritional yeast to get that cheesey umami flavor.

I haven’t really thought about cheese replacements. I might have to look up the coconut cream cheese! I saw other people using the nutritional yeast, but haven’t gotten any yet.

It was easy to make coconut cream cheese. I just added probiotics (used my usual yogurt culture) and set it in a strainer for yogurt cheese, let it sit 48 hours to ferment. Easy peasy.

A little update. I ended up breaking my plateau (after being up and down between 265-275 since the beginning of February I weighed in at 264.8 on Saturday). Then I let emotions and hormones get the better of me and had a carby meal on Saturday. I was pretty mad at myself but I hopped right back on the keto wagon. I did have a little cheese on my dinner last night, and a little on the leftovers I had for lunch today, but will continue dairy free for at least this week to see what kind of results I have. It’s shark week so I won’t be weighing until the weekend so hopefully I don’t see any adverse affects of the stupid carby meal on the scale.
