Low co2 blood results

(Haimiko) #1

I’ve been keto 18 mos now and my recent co2 blood levels came back 16mmol/L, where normal range is between 20- 29. I’ve read that co2 goes down on low carb but not sure by how much. Anyone else seeing this? What’s normal for the ketogenic diet?

This speaks article is specific to your question, particularly the section; “Fat Burning Leads to Low Carbon Dioxide Levels"

Yes thank you. I found that article as well but am also interested in others experiences

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #4

All I can say is that in February, after nearly a year on keto, my CO2 was smack dab in the middle of the normal range.

I also searched the net and could not find something significant to post here

However I saw interesting view that if it is kidneys what you are worried about, then there are better test for them.

the possitive side is at least you will generate less green house gases :joy:

Yes. Even thought my eGFR was in a good range I will have my PCP order up some Kidney tests as well just to be safe since my last year’s test was right in the middle as well. Only thing that has changed since then is me converting to a full timer IF of 5x/week. I think it may be related to me burning fat, which is a cleaner burning fuel and these tests are probably calibrated to non-keto carb burners who only fasted 8-10 prior to the test. I took the blood draw 16hrs after my last meal. During the lab drawl, the lab tech asked when my last meal was. When I told her it was over 16hrs ago, she looked startled and remarked that I must be ravenous and should go get something to eat. I told her that I wasn’t hungry and I wasn’t due for another meal for another 5-6 hours.
