Low carb practice in UK

(Ed) #1

Hello all. My friend was currently diagnosed with diabetes. Can anyone recommend a low carb practice which would help her to come off her medicine? Looking for practice in UK. Thank you!

Step #1, stop eating carbs.

Step #2, use the search function (magnifier at the right top of the page) to search this forum. It works and there’s a boatload of commentary here from many, many folks who have been there and done that successfully already.

This doctor is great and on Twitter:

If you have Twitter, you could ask him about whether there’s a doctor where you are. He might be able to point you in the correct direction.

What exactly do you mean?

(Ed) #5

@Shortstuff I mean so that the person can stop using insulin safely, under watch of specialist

(Ed) #6

@amwassil thank you. I will look around

Dr. David Unwin is the most visible NHS practitioner who recommends low-carb eating, but there are others, I’m sure. I don’t remember exactly where Dr. Unwin is located, but I seem to remember he’s in the North, and his practise is called Norwood Avenue. If you get in touch with the practise, I’m sure they could put you on to someone in your area.

@PaulL Thank you

David and his wife Jen are based in Southport, but I think they are a GP practice so may not take referrals. Both are on Twitter as mentioned, and Jen has a really good book available on Amazon which looks at food addiction, co authored with some great low carb practitioners. Maybe your friend could talk to his GP to support the insulin issue? More and more are willing to listen (just not enough)

Dr. Unwin also has these, which I think are cool:

There is a practitioner in Uk named Elliot Overton who might be able to help you. He is familiar with low carb eating, but also knows about B vitamins being important for diabetics.

Thanks for that bit of information. I am assuming the OP is probably not in the practise area, but would I be right in thinking they could recommend someone in the OP’s area? Or does the NHS not do that?

Does the NHS recommend a Low carb practitioner…hahahahahah … good one Paul!

This might help; Global map of low-carb clinicians — 715+ and counting:

Shows at least 20 in the UK,

Interesting. I found a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) near me. Not only did I learn what a “Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine” was, she’s not too far from me.

I went to Twitter and asked Dr. Unwin if he knows of a resource the original poster can use. I’ll update if he responds back.

Might find someone here although they are few and far between in the UK.

Ho ho ho…

For the vast majority in the UK you have no choice… complete lottery as to standard of care and treatments received… although to be fair that often appears to be the case in the US too with a little more possibility of changing.

(Allie) #18

There’s one near me… but I’m outside their area by maybe three miles

(bulkbiker) #19

Might be worth asking… ? If you want to change that is…

I was under the impression that WE, the reformed metabolic syndrome people, are leading the evidential change in dietary habits, not government or corporate sponsored clinicians, (some) consultants, PR specialists, marketers/sales people, lobbyists, (some) sales reps…and general ars wipe s.?
