I wanted to share a wonderful passage from Ivor Cummins and Jeffry Gerber’s book Eat Rich and Live Long
LOVE YOUR GHRELIN!
Ivor applied the ten action steps way back, following a period of intensive research and discovery (as did Jeff). He easily shed over 30 pounds in around eight weeks—without any notable exercise. This ease of success depended utterly on the understanding of physiology and food that we have presented in this book. But one psychological tool made Ivor’s personal journey particularly easy: he learned to love his ghrelin.
Ghrelin is the hormone that signals the brain to feel hunger, and Ivor embraced its mild signals as a mark of his success. Ghrelin’s voice conveys the promise of huge health and other benefits, so Ivor associated the voice of his ghrelin with reward. This ensured that the habit of health has remained with him ever since. Ghrelin is a hormone that raises its voice as your stomach empties. It creates a distinct feeling of hollowness inside you. It can signal you with anything from a whisper to a roar. It can be a friend or a fiend—you decide which. If you don’t understand it properly and embrace it, it can make you eat when you should not.
There are two steps to loving your ghrelin:
-
Soften ghrelin’s voice in your body. To do this, it is imperative to become fat-adapted. When you are an expert fat-burner, your body will smoothly transition to burning body fat when your stomach empties. This process will quieten your ghrelin. As we’ve talked about extensively, to become a fat-burner, you must keep your carb intake low—especially refined carb. These foods will raise the ghrelin volume to unreasonable levels.
-
Learn to appreciate what ghrelin is really saying. The message of ghrelin isn’t, “Eat something now!” It’s actually saying many much more positive things.
It says, “Congratulations—you are now burning your body fat, just like your ancestors before you.”
It says, “You are performing an enormously beneficial metabolic workout as we speak.”
It says, “You are gaining the huge benefits of fasting for slimness, health, and longevity.”
It says, “You are lowering your risk of chronic diseases like coronary heart disease and cancer with every passing minute.”
It says, “You are reliving the experience of what made us human and you will achieve the rightful self-sufficiency of our species, so be very proud.”
It says, “Congratulations on leaving behind the constant-grazing mentality of our disease-ridden modern society.”
Most of all, it says, “You are a winner, and you will win.”
