Lost weight but now I look old

(Alan Carr) #1

I am 52, already within 2 or 3 lbs of my goal of 77 kg or about 160 lb or so, in fact I’m more interested in gaining some muscle and general fitness now, rather than weightloss.

Thing is, my face now looks much more wrinkly, especially deep lines around my mouth and under my eyes.

I don’t get enough sleep and could drink more water I guess, but any other clues or experience from you guys?

In the same boat here. I think you probably look better than you think. Take a picture and see how you look before. People tell me I look great, to me I look old.

(Alan Carr) #3

Thanks for the kind words but there’s no doubt I have much deeper creases than before, and even my (never overly subtle) wife cheerfully agrees I look ooold…

I would still rather be as I am now than as I was before, for sure, but was hoping this was a well-known thing with some proven tips or methods to fight it?

More sleep is deffo on my to-do list, sometime next month maybe. Or the month after…

Unfortunately, fat fills and smooths out the wrinkles. :frowning:

Well I tried a more general Google search and it seems “diet face” is a thing - and after 40 we all have to choose between a great face or a great butt, or something like that.

Well whatever happens I’ll be 60 in 8 years, so pointless trying to be young I guess, but I certainly can be fit, slim and strong, and I’m already getting there.

Old face and young body, or young face and old body?

I’ll go for the young body every time. And my butt looks pretty good

try using some salicylic acid pads on your face daily, oxy pads even great value brand works. It’s a tiny amount of sa but what it does it help produce collagen. It will exfoliate your skin and give you younger looking plumper skin. don’t use a scrub that says it exfoliates, those are all marketing lies, only this little bit of acid is all you need in these over the counter face pads used for acne. Don’t use it when planing to go out in the sun, i just avoid it all summer.

I’d say give it some time. Through fasting or eating in a timed window, your body will start to eat away at the excess skin that might be contributing to this wrinkle old look. I say this because my friend of 55 years lost over 40 pounds last year and the first thing I noticed was how old she looked now. A year later, that seems to have gone away and the wrinkles I saw are now gone. But this is anecdotal.

If you are interested in supplements that might help, look up astaxanthin. It is supposed to help rejuvenate the skin. It is in krill oil, so I take MegaRed krill oil daily.

After 80+ pounds lost, I have loose skin where my double chins used to be. Not liking my new waddle, so hoping the MegaRed helps.

it will take some time, but it will get a bit better. I use bone broth, collagen powder and fasting to help with my skin issues. I’m older than you and female, so this stuff does bother me. My skin is better this time around, I’ve had to lose over 30+ lbs. before, and I think it is because of the them. Fasting over 36 hr. kicks in autophagy, which seems to help with skin issues. Collagen also helps the skin, and that is in the bone broths as well.

Just enjoy the other benefits for now and see how you feel later on.

I’ve seen that in almost everyone over 40 that loses weight, including myself right now. You lose some in you face also so the skin sags a little and the lines get a little deeper. I’ve noticed that people do lose the excess skin between 6 and 12 months after they lose the weight and start to look younger. At least I’m hoping that it works that way for me too.

I believe collagen works if your skin can produce it. You might want to look into using a derma-roller aka micro-needling. It works and there are tons of videos on Youtube, if you are that concerned. I might add that it is not very pleasant. :grimacing:

Am 52 and have not experienced any wrinkling just firming/toning - perhaps because of recomposition margins being small - or because of having exfoliated on regular basis for decades.

Anyway, the skin replaces itself via exfoliation and new growth about every 7 years, so it’s helpful to remember it’s a process. I’d think the process is sped up with keto, and that you may find that skin renewal is a benefit much sooner than that!

Of course, there’s nothing like sleep deprivation and dehydration to age people’s faces. Maybe attend to your salt & water intake, and other minerals or herbs to help you have restful sleep - it will show.

Also, if you’re a jogger/runner or were so in the past - it can create a huge muscle imbalance between lower body and upper body, as the body prioritizes the legs and emaciates the face. If that’s the case, adding some upper body strength training may leverage the ketogenic muscle restoration that’s already happening, even if you can’t see it.

Add more fat to your program

Following- I want to see what others say, and I’m also investigating a couple of things that are supposed to help with collagen production - HA (hyaluronic (sp?) acid) and ALA. I’m feeling like a small “pink elephant” ATM … If anyone has experience with supplementing those 2 things, I’d like to hear more about them.

Yep noticing the wrinkles. Especially on the side I tend to sleep on. Exfoliate and St. Ives pads for reducing the look. We gals wrinkle, the guys look distinguished. It’s the fat that looks lovely, and soft when young. Ah well, I earned most of these. :grinning:

I live in Borneo, so that’s a no-no

“Ah well, I earned most of these.”

Smile lines, right?

Alan, I’ve lost 95 lbs over the past 2 1/2 years on Keto - and I’m thrilled - but I too have been dismayed by how much my face has aged. I don’t spend time in the sun, I don’t abuse alcohol, and I drink half my body weight in ounces of water every day. Not consuming enough fat has not been part of the problem for me. I’ve been very diligent about ingesting at least 150 grams of healthy fats per day in the form of raw, unpasteurized almonds, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, eggs, etc.
Anyway, about a year ago, I started adding high quality collagen powder to my protein shakes, making bone broth (Google bone broth - it’s all the rage), and taking bone marrow supplements. Within three weeks, I could see a difference in my facial skin and in other wrinkled/sagging areas. It has worked beautifully for me, and even my unobservant (but dear) husband commented that my face looked “tighter.” Woo Hoo!
Oh, and for sleep? I take Passionflower, hops, skullcap, calcium, magnesium, and zinc a hour before bed and I sleep like a teenager. This has worked for me however, so always check with a health professional before taking herbs/supplements.

You can still do short fasts and look up other ways to promote autophagy. In 3 years I suspect you’ll look quite different.

Yeah, fat can make the skin taunt and less wrinkled.

I’ve also noticed with weight loss that areas like my upper arms look more crepey. Without the extra fat to plump it up, the skin can sag. :disappointed:
