Losing weight in unexpected places

(darlee44) #1

I have a question for the old timers , @richard, @TomSeest, @carl haha or at least some who have lost a ton of weight on keto. Since starting keto in October, I’ve lost 30 pounds…I know, exciting right? The only thing is, I’m losing weight in my legs, arms and other places that I don’t need to lose weight. My tummy is not budging. Will the continued weightloss eventually get to my stomach because my chicken legs can’t take too much more

I’m down 90 lbs, hardly any of it from my most troublesome area…my torso. It’s almost all come from face, arms, and legs. I think it’s quite typical for the area that deposits the easiest to give it up the hardest.

I find that fasting does a great number on taking pounds off of tummy area.

No advice, but I can totally relate. I keep losing inches off my stomach area, and my thighs and bum are looking like they are out of proportion. I do some fasting and lower the carbs - and I get smaller again on my top half. My even small boobs got even smaller. Genetics are weird and not fair sometimes!

I’ve lost 76lbs and it started from the top down. Face, shoulders, arms, boobs…everywhere but my tummy. It’s the last to go. Take measurements and you will see it reduce. It’s much slower off the tummy but like a previous poster said fasting makes mine shrink quite quickly.

There are two sources of body fat in your central region;

  • the visceral stuff wrapped around your organs, which is really unhealthy and that goes very quickly if you fast
  • the sub-cutaneous (under skin) body fat around your middle and that is benign from a health standpoint (or even beneficial) but it looks unsightly.

Where you store excess energy depends on your hormonal environment, for women in child bearing ages that is mostly on the thighs and it’s designed to stay out of the way of the developing fetus but provide prodigious amounts of energy during lactation.

For the rest of us, it’s mostly around the middle. Reducing that requires that we convince our body to defend a lower amount of body fat. Which generally just requires time with as little insulin as possible - and the more insulin resistant the more time that can take.

My belly fat went in two stages: First the internal visceral fat, then a reduction in subcutaneous fat. I had a lot of visceral fat, and my waist got smaller fairly quickly. The subcutaneous I measured with calipers and it’s reduced on my upper abdomen but I still have a slab on my lower abdomen.
So basically, there are multiple types and distributions of fat. Trust your body to take them in the order it sees fit.

I’ve lost it in my feet (sandles and shoe sizes changed), my hands and fingers, my face, etc. The last place I will lose it is in my stomach. Currently, I’m losing it in my back. I’m losing my back fat.

My legs and butt first. My pants were baggy but the waist was still fitting… Then in about 2 wks I dropped 2 pant sizes. I still have a lot to go. My face and arns are not fun to look at. LOL

The torso fat was the last to go for me too.

In the link there is a picture of the hormones involved in where fat is stored, but it’s in Swedish though  I was unable to find the map on her english site…
http://martinajohansson.se/ditt-fett-dina-hormoner-fettkarta/ .

Storing fat or stubborn fat around the stomach is supposed to be linked to:
both women and men: High insulin. high cortisol and low HGH
only men: High estrogen, low testosteron
only women: low estrogen, high testosteron

So maybe you still have some kind of hormonal inbalance which haven’t corrected itself yet?
(Let me know if I should translate more  )

My tummy/waistline seems persistent, although I’ve dropped another pants size.

My first big drop was about 50 lbs of torso/stomach, but having trouble getting below 37’

It’s annoying!!

Glad I searched.
