Losing ground!

(Marty Blume) #1

Hi All, I am new to this chat, and I am looking for help. I started keto on July 2, 2019 and until about 3-4 weeks ago I had lost 18 pounds and my A1C went down to 5.9 ! I am a diabetic, and I was able to stop using insulin and another diabetes drug. For the past 3-4 weeks my morning blood glucose readings have risen to a 170 - 190 range and I have gained back 3 pounds! I am doing essentially the same things with my diet, etc. Any thoughts on why I now seem to be going backwards? Thanks!

Welcome Marty. Did your numbers go up after you stopped the insulin and oral meds?

Read this article, does it sound like you?

Does your blood sugar go up after eating? How much? If you fast for a day does it change? Are you consuming enough salt and minerals daily?

Hello PetaMarie. Yes, a few weeks after I stopped the insulin and oral meds.

Hi SunnyD, thanks for the article. I will review it soon when I’m not so tired. But at a glance it looks like it could be what’s happening to me. I’ll let you know my thoughts after I give it a good read. Thanks again!

A three pound variation in weight is probably due to water retention. Highly doubtful it is fat, you have to eat carbs chronically for that. To actually start gaining fat you have to first fill up liver glycogen, which is usually considerably more than three pounds, then you have to continue to eat significant carbs, as the excess after the liver is filled is stored as fat.

Dawn phenomenon. Many people with diabetes observe that their numbers first thing in the morning are often higher than their target. This condition is called “ dawn phenomenon ” and it can occur in people with type 2 diabetes . It’s best described as a high fasting blood sugar (FBS) number after waking in the morning.

I don’t know diabetes well at all and this is something I hear a lot about from those that do. Obviously research it for more truths and info on it please.

3 pounds is just a normal fluctuation in any given day for almost all people out there. There is no concern truly at this point for you.

As we eat we are heavier on the scale. Water adds weight LOL Anything in us on any day is gonna do that and it really is not cause for concern.

But now I focus on the biggie………I am doing essentially the same.

that big old essentially can mean a lot of things. Some think that a few changes are not bad…yet they can be worst…some think adding this or that doesn’t matter to the body cause it is ‘keto friendly and approved’ and oh boy, yea it is trouble. So just take big note on that. Big note on how you are truly eating. Cause that carb creep and junky processed food convenience food creep happens to all of us. So take the hard look at the true menu. Best you can do for yourself.

best of luck and I think you sound as if you are truly doing ok!! rock on!!
