Looking For Pointers/Words Of Advice/Etc

Great video! Thanks! Now off to look over that thread. Oh and, coincidentally, on Sunday I was wearing a pair of pants I hadn’t been able to get zipped and snapped shut for a few years. So, I know something is going on.

I grew up the same way, hating the feel of fat in meat (my mother cooked very fatty pork roasts, etc for my father - who remained thin, hmmm - but I couldn’t stand it). I have gradually increased my ability to eat fats by starting with lots of butter, coconut oil, etc. I can tolerate much more than I could before I started doing a low carb WOE eating a few years ago, but there are still limits! For chicken, the nice thing is that the thighs with skin/bones are way cheaper than any other cut and you can do a lot with them. If you can’t stand the skin right now, pull it off and the thigh meat will still have a lot more fat than breasts. Save that fat in the freezer, though, b/c one day you are probably going to love having baked/fried chicken skin as a snack!
One very good recipe for the thighs is Dana Carpender’s Wicked Wings (for wings, obviously, but I do it for thighs)

(Shar) #40

So I just made up half of my chicken thighs (for the next few days dinners/lunches)…with the skin on lol…using this recipe (https://thesaltymarshmallow.com/crispy-baked-chicken-thighs/). And OMG, it took everything in me NOT to eat more than two! They were so good. And yes, I ate the crispy skin! Cause it was crispy! LOL Gonna make the other half another day with the recipe that was posted above (the Wicked Chicken). Can’t wait!

One of us, One of us!!

You know what I’m gonna say… EAT TWO!!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Do what makes you feel good, but please (broken record)… don’t fear the fat! Keep up the great progress.

(Shar) #42

LMFAO!! I DID eat two. It took everything I had not to eat more! But once I had my veggies with the two I was good and full. Thanks!

Gaining in the beginning

But see, one more wouldn’t have been a bad thing and upped your fat intake to get that metabolism running higher.

(Rob) #44

Sorry - I misread… so…

…You shoulda had THREE

I’m just glad you’re pushing yourself to give keto a proper go. Can’t ask for more than that.

Ok, so I’m 4 days away from the end of my first 4 weeks!! Since I started this thread I’ve tried a few of the suggestions such as, I’ve added more fats in the way of steaks and chicken thighs with skin. Everything else has stayed the same food wise since it seems I had that down pat via what everyone else said.

For the past week and a half, as suggested, I’ve also been eating TWICE a day, instead of the once a day that I’ve been accustomed to for decades! Anyway, in this past week and a half of doing said things I’ve noticed…

  1. I have NOT lost anymore weight. In fact, I am up 3 lbs from the lowest I’ve weighed in since starting Keto
  2. I have been craving and wanting stuff like raisin bran cereal, yogurt, to name a few (but didn’t have them)
  3. Have GAINED an inch back on my waist (haven’t lost anymore inches anywhere else either)
  4. Have NOT cheated or gone off plan once.

Still been at it as described previously so not sure why the slight gain in lbs and the inch back on my waist. In fact, I even switched from 20 net carbs to 20 total carbs (which is MUCH harder). Everything else has stayed the same.

I still have NOT been exercising at all. Just everyday stuff around the house, chasing after grandkids, taking care of yard work, etc. It’s also NOT that time of month. Still weeks away before that comes. LOL

Still getting in my electrolytes, water, etc. So yeah, not sure why nothing seems to be happening in the way of loss. But, I’m still gonna keep at it. Hopefully things start moving soon and I’ll experience that “woosh” that everyone seems to talk about.

I do understand your frustration!
My suggestion however is to keep doing exactly what you are doing. Remind yourself that your body has to do a considerable amount of transitioning and reconstructing to this new way you are trying to teach it to energize itself. It also has to build different enzyme families and bile salts to digest new food sources (such as the higher fats).
And yet while doing this it is working on repairing a lifetime of damages from a sugar poison high carb diet (and other destructive elements).
So it has a lot to do before tackling reducing weight. You still have to let it become fat adapted that typically will still take 2 - 4 weeks (some it takes longer) to achieve. Stay on the true path and your body will get to it. Trust the process, KCKO.

(Shar) #47

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom! I’m definitely sticking with it. No reason not to at this point. Guess eventually things have to start moving again. I hope! LOL

I’m not going to add anything as I’m already late to this party but, you mentioned not liking something chicken related. I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t feel obligated to force yourself to eat a food you don’t like. But, in the case for skinless chicken, you have to add fat back. Plenty of us don’t eat liver for example when it’s a pretty healthy food.

(Shar) #49

Yeah I had said I didn’t like fat on meat or fatty skin but I gave it (chicken thighs with skin) a chance and made it in the oven in a way so that it got crispy and it was fine. But yeah, still won’t catch me munching on fatty edges of a steak. LOL

(Ron) #50

No problem. You read being new about all the people that loose so much weight right out of the gate. It is easier to see as you experience it, that the water that is drawn from your stored glucose reserves when the body is searching and feeding on the only place left to get that prized glucose from is what causes the big weight loss. Then people usually see the stall while the transition period is actually taking place and get discouraged. This causes many to quit or “it doesn’t work for me” assumption and don’t get to experience the wonderful benefits keto has to offer.
Stay strong!

(Shar) #51

Yeah I can understand how and why some would walk away. I think a huge part of why I’m not, besides health reasons, is the fact that it really doesn’t seem like a diet as the foods I’m eating I already indulged in before. Minus the carbs and sugar items, of course.

(Chris W) #52

I think I asked this earlier in the the thread, but how are you feeling?

And I will admit freely dropped a ton of weight in the first couple weeks, so I am one of “those people”. When you really loose, and have nights were you cannot sleep, your heart is pounding, and you are bouncing off the wall, its 55 in the house and you are sweating, it is down right scary I was knocked off kilter in tornado of all kinds of things at once. And when the dust cleared and I stood back up I realized I was a much better person in mind and body and had lost weight too. Notice the order of things, I would never quite this WOE because of the way I feel, the ability to bend over again, and knowing now that I can effect my eventual outcome in life.
Keep in mind also what works for you today may not work tomorrow, the reverse can be true as well. But I also believe the word “work” in the context may not achieve your goal in your mind, but it maybe achieving the goal in your body. Give it some time, don’t fret, at four weeks I had already made a whole bunch of mistakes, and I only wish I had a place like this to go ask questions.

Well, been feeling fine since I started. Just the occasional stomach issues. But energy is good, kinda feel like I always need/should be doing something like I don’t want to just be sitting here doing nothing, sleeping just fine (no better or worse than before I started), once I’m done eating I feel content and full but not overly so, not hungry between meals, no headaches, no cravings (until this recent week when I suddenly started craving raisin bran and yogurt) etc. Not sure what else to say but I guess it’s going good.

I’m guessing things are happening inside even if I can’t see and tell right now. Also, since starting I have lost a total of 16.9 lbs. But as I said, I gained like 3 of them back some time in the last week/week and a half. But I’m guessing it’s probably just water and not actual fat. I also lost several inches all over. But those pounds and inches all happened in the first two weeks. NOTHING has happened since then except for the gain back of those 3lbs and that one inch on my waist. But it’s still early in the game. Anything can happen I suppose.

(Raj Seth) #54

Have you considered liverwurst? A very nutrient dense food
3# is rounding error in the scheme of things

(Shar) #55

Heck no! LOL JK. I have eaten that in the past but very little. Like maybe once every 5 years. LOL And usually when and if I do, I have to eat it on rye bread smothered in mustard or else I can’t get it down. LOL No clue why but I can’t just eat that stuff by itself but who knows. Could always give it a try.

(Raj Seth) #56

Liverwurst with horseradish and a a slice of cheese. Yummm
