Looking for Keto Doctor in Atlanta - High LDL P (particle ) count

(Fred Bartholomai) #1

Hello,

I live in Atlanta, GA.
I have been following the keto diet for several months. Have steadily lost weight.
Only in late Dec I have started measuring my ketones/glucose.
Right now I am averaging glucose between 99 and 107, ketones between .4 and 1.1.
I have gone from 203lbs to 185lbs (today). I feel great. More energy.
I am committed to this way of life - so many benefits - short term and long term.

However, I have high LDL Particle numbers are all high!
My current doctor is recommending I go on statins. I do not!
He is not really at all interested in helping me figure this out.
Was resistant to getting Lipid panel NMR done - only with much resistance and
even pushed back against getting C Reactive Protein and Hemoglobin A1c tested as well.
I am done with him.

C Reactive Protein ( 1.0) good, and A1c ( 5.4) - so some inflammation markers
are normal / low.

Now in the hunt for a low carb doctor with experience heart health, cholesterol levels.
Much harder than I thought.

I am considering some online/virtual consults with doctors out of state to get their opinion.
Here is what I have come across so far and will be having a few conversations next week.
See where that goes.

Denver Doctor - Very into low carb lifestyle

  • He is the one I most excited about. Seems to be the most immersed in keto, does it himself, attends low carb conferences, talks about blood work, cholesterol, lipid panels, etc. etc.

Dr Ken Berry Online consult - $60/15 min

Dr. Tanya Lehine D.O.
at the Centrespringmd.com here In Atlanta - They are functional medicine type practice.

  • downside - is more expensive - they would be more out of network doctor.

Digressing a little bit - Found an excellent site on remote health care for type 2 diabetes
patients - reversing it, using low carb diet - high success rate.

  • Look up Virta Health and Dr. Sarah Hallberg ( expert on Lipids NMR Panels) - she has a great ted talk (more than 4Million views)

  • They are pioneering the way in virtual - telemedicine - which I am thinking more about now.

Anyone have recommendations for a low carb friendly doctor in the Atlanta area?
I have searched the normal low carb doctor recommended searches -
the above doctors I found with more digging in on research on my own.

Regards,
Fred B

I really lucked out when I was on vacation and my doctor retired. I got assigned a new one who I was resistant to see for a while till it was completely necessary. I had just started keto the week before. My new doc is a power lifter and told me that I was doing the best possible thing for my health recovery (post transplant pre diabetes). He’s been very supporting with giving blood work tests when I requested them.

I hope that you find someone, I wonder if a sports medicine doctor would be more familiar with keto eating because many athletes use it in training. I hope you find a solution and a good doctor who understands your needs but it’s always important to remember that doctors can only give you recommendations, do with that what you will. It’s your life and you can choose the ā€œnot recommendedā€œ path if you feel it’s what you need. I’m sure many of us here have done this in the face of a doctor who advised differently. Doctors aren’t particularly more healthy than anyone in the general public and they only preach what they learned in medical school, which usually changes a lot with time. Low fat was a total blow out healthwise that every doctor spouted off about for decades causing mass obesity and diabetes to run rampant in our society.

Hi Fred, I initially had a total cholesterol of 188(not bad). After being on the Mercola Mitochondrial Diet(of which ketosis is a side effect) for 6 months my total cholesterol dropped to 143, HDL went up 1 point, the rest was due to a decrease in LDL. I’m only following LCHF diet and no longer track the specifics of what I eat other than to keep carbs at a minimum and medium protein and no vegetable/ seed/nut oils ever… I don’t know how high your cholesterol is but worth looking into it… Lots of people are starting to say that elevated cholesterol is not a problem in the absence of inflammation.
I am not an MD… just fat for thought
Good Luck
Bill

Hi Fred, wondering if you had any luck finding a keto friendly doctor in Atlanta? I just moved here and have the same question now.

Hi Jessica,

Yes I did! (see info below)

I found him through a Keto Adapt event that is coming to Atlanta on Sat March, 21.

He will be attending the event as of two MD Doctors.

He will be giving a talk and there will be a Q&A session as well - ask any question

you want. It was very interesting last year.

I plan on attending. Perhaps we could say ā€œhelloā€ - if you decide to go.

Here is the info:

When you call say you want to see him for ā€œweight lossā€ - for insurance reasons.

When you make an appt, they will send some forms to fill out - The most interesting

part was : What are you areas of main concern ?

And then you get to discuss these things with him. It was a great appt.

What I mean is, you get ā€˜time’ to talk about these things - I didn’t feel ā€œrushedā€ at all.
