Gail…

You can find a ketone meter either online or at the pharmacy.

To give you an idea of what this means, his dawn effect BG used to be 160. It’s going down. As it goes down, his ketones go up.

I’ve got this one http://www.novacares.com/nova-max-plus/ does both glucose and ketones (different strips obviously) I started with the Precision Xtra as thats the popular one but these ketone strips are half the price. While I was running out I kept using both and they were always the same or maybe .1-.2 off from each other in both directions. The other plus is every couple times I get glucose strips I just order the “starter” kit which gives me a free meter! Got a couple we’ll say!

@NativeKetoMan that is awesome, congrats.

@Brenda So before I have to join the new IDM membership program to ask you a question :smile:…

Something I’ve been waiting to hear addressed in the podcasts but either hasn’t really been discussed, or I just missed. Does the amount of time it takes for blood glucose to return to “normal” levels just depend on how insulin resistant you are and/or how far diabetes had progressed?

I’ve been on and off LCHF for several years, but on Keto for a couple months now. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic a couple years ago but refused drugs both because I knew I could fix it on my own, and because I’ve seen the downward spiral perpetuated by meds/insulin injections in my dad.

I fell off the wagon soon after that diagnosis and pretty much lived in ignorant bliss up until starting Keto. Unfortunately since I knew my doctor wasn’t on board with my choice to follow the LCHF lifestyle, I didn’t go back, so I don’t have starting numbers for my blood work. I also didn’t start checking my blood sugars until I had already been on Keto for a month.

When I started regularly checking my glucose about a month ago, my fasting level was between 120-130, with morning readings 150-160. Now, I’m usually around 110 fasting with mornings up the around 130. My post meal readings don’t usually go above 125 and are usually back down to around 110 within a few hours, but the only times I’ve had readings under 100 is in the late evenings durning extended fasts (like by the 3rd or 4th day). I need to get a ketone meter. I’ve been using the pee strips, but just to check that I was in ketosis, I wasn’t too concerned about the levels.

My NSVs are numerous, the weight has been coming off, and I feel better than I have in years, so I haven’t been too concerned, I’m just wondering if there’s something else I should be doing, or just ride it out and be patient. I’m guessing at this point that by the time I started Keto, I was likely full blown type 2 diabetic, just undiagnosed and un-medicated.

Okay… I realize that’s a lot to ask. Maybe I do just need to figure out how to budget for the IDM membership, and/or maybe I should be Emailing this to Richard and Carl for possible discussion. It just seems that so often we hear n=1 examples of people that have no markers of diabetes within a few months, and I’m still at a place where, although the doctor probably wouldn’t prescribe medication, I would still be considered pre-diabetic.

It absolutely depends on how insulin-resistant you are and how far your disease has progressed! Unfortunately it also depends on the individual, even if you are strict ketogenic. Emailing Richard or Carl is not the answer and joining IDM if it’s not in your budget isn’t the answer either.
A free resource such as ketogenic forum is! You can bring up any of these questions here in the forum for discussion. Look for the topic it best fits and pose your question there. Or join a thread and possibly get your question answered and someone else’s topic. Use the search function at the top of the page. The Hourglass. The Forum has a really good search function. And it would probably be more effective to pose your questions one at a time. All of IDM’s information is available for free on their website. And Have you listened to the 2 keto dudes podcast? There are over a hundred shows now and if you’re new to this I would recommend with starting with episode 1. There’s a lot of work and a lot of reading that needs to be done on your part. We really do need to be our own Educators and our own Advocates, but by all means use the Forum to help guide you.

Thanks Brenda. I discovered the 2ketodudes podcast about a month ago through following Jason Fung, and started it from the beginning. I’m just now caught all the way up. I had been holding off on questions because most were eventually answered, I just don’t remember this topic being addressed. I had searched the forum but didn’t really find much on the topic of how long it takes blood glucose levels to return to normal, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. It actually made me feel better to see Kevin’s numbers and that he’s still working his way back down to normal. I’m not too worried given that although the levels are higher then I’d like, they do seem to be slowly dropping, but most important, are never spiking after meals. KCKO

Well, I can tell you why your blood glucose readings are still slightly high. It’s because your liver is still making too much glucose. That’s left over from your days that you were very sick. And when you’re fasting and all of that glucose is used up in your system, that’s when you see your lowest readings. I think you and I have talked before, sorry if I didn’t remember you. And I don’t mean to be flippant at all. You can ask as many questions as you’d like but when posting them as a topic in the Forum one at a time will probably get you better results. Yes it takes time yes you have to be patient. As long as you see your numbers trending down you’re doing a good job. And I guess I don’t have to go back and review what you wrote Because if you started with dr. Fung you must be fasting. Fasting is the best way to use up that visceral fat and get those blood glucose readings normal all the time. I’d say keep doing what you’re doing keep researching and keep asking questions. Your numbers are actually looking good. I don’t know if you’ve seen any my numbers but I’ve been doing this for 4 years so don’t compare to me!
Unless you want to predict possibilities for yourself in the future . I certainly didn’t have great numbers the first few months although they’ve been slowly trending down these past several years . LOL

:smile:I don’t know how you could forget, there’s only what; 10,000 people on this forum? I took no offense.

Thanks for your help. I was pretty sure I was on the right track given all the other NSV… and the scale victories.

If for no other reason, just feeling better and being able to walk around Costco without back pain is enough reason to keep going with Keto.
