Listening to body

#1

I will keep this short and leave out details but I need thoughts. Listening to your body is one of my favorite things about keto. Whenever I have a big serving of green vegetables ie salad, green beans, broccoli I frequent the bathroom more than normal the following day. I know vegetables aren’t necessary but do feel I should eat them. With that being said, my body seems to want to rid itself of the vegetables quickly! Any thoughts or opinions?

There are plenty of people who live very happily and feel good without any sort of veg in their diets. I have looked into doing so myself, but truth is, I actually like eating veg and don’t have any problems with it so continue to do so. But I am a massive fan of intuitive eating and paying attention to the signals given by my body so always encourage others to do the same if they’re able to.

I think your best options are to either avoid specific vegetables that irritate your digestive system or to improve your gut microbiome so that your body will better process what currently irritates you. It’s also possible that your DNA just does not get along with plant matter and you might have to stay married to carnivore tendencies, which is not so terrible if you enjoy steak and bacon.

I have paid attention to my gut microbiome for a while now, probably about a year before starting Keto I went off of all artificial sweeteners and tried to promote better gut health. I did a lot of research on it, I really enjoy the science behind all of this stuff. I’m closing in on 3 months on Keto and have continued to avoid artificial sweeteners and just use natural sweeteners here and there, but very limited. I definitely enjoy my meats with most lunches these days being meat, cheese, nuts and a few raspberries. I’m good with dairy as well. I’m going to continue trying different vegetables in different ways and just see what happens. Although my body wants to get rid of these vegetables by the next morning, it does seem to help clean me out (sorry for the detail!) and make me feel better.

That’s the key thing

Not sure which one is the genuine body message.

Green veggies are really good during ketosis with all the fat going thru ur liver, itd be best to keep them in ur diet, just stop the ones u react badly to.

#8

I think the body message is getting rid of them quickly. I feel like i should eat them because that’s what we have always been told. I will continue to experiment and monitor.

I hardly eat any veggies anymore. I don’t label myself as carnivore but I’m pretty darn close (the only thing standing in the way is my homemade chocolate which I refuse to give up  ). Occasionally… very seldom …. I can eat some spinach. But a lot of the keto-friendly veggies are FODMAP foods which upset my stomach a lot. I’ve been totally fine without veggies, I feel better than ever… I’m sleeping better than ever, etc. From the research and reading I’ve done, I don’t think I’m depriving myself of my required nutrients at all.

What is FODMAP?

#11

@Tux - FODMAP stands for “fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols”
Here’s a good article about it. Way before I was keto, I had already cut out gluten and grains and it helped a lot. I think partially my issues were related to the fact that I don’t have a gallbladder (which means liver bile goes unregulated into my intestines). So gross but interesting.

people with digestive track issues may feel better when they eliminate vigitables from the diet.

But I believe that including leafy greens such as lettuce in your keto diet can be useful for detoxifying your body.

I have diverticulitis and can not handle kale for instance but I found lettuce with keto diet better than carnivore ( still experement ing )

bile will be recirculation with the toxin if no fiber to flush such toxin out.

I heard this from Dr John Douillard. Otherwise you overload your liver.

But we have people flourishing on carnivore diet like doctor Shawn Baker .

my conclusion that if you do not have digestive track issues, leafy greens are beneficial.

Thanks for all the feedback. I’m good with most of the items on that list. It’s easier to pin point things these days now that I’m eating simpler. I also love this forum as we can have a informative conversation in regards to bathroom usage haha!

Does your belly hurt? Are you not seeing solids in your frequent bathroom trips? Expelling food a day later doesn’t seem like a big deal? I go potty 1-3 times a day (on and off keto) and that’s considered perfectly normal haha

PS can I say, “poop” on this forum? I’ve never written about pooping so vaguely before lolol

The further you get on this journey, the more clarity you will find. I always poo-poohed the FODMAP thin because removing them from my diet didn’t make a significant difference in the past. Now that I cleaned up my eating, I’ve gone from double digit movements in a day to daily or alternate day movements. And normal movements to boot.

I had an old favorite recipe with onions, mushrooms and cabbage Thursday night. It was like someone set off a bomb in my system. Had it again for lunch Friday because I’m a glutton for punishment and don’t like wasting food. Same thing. The only things that were a big detour from my now normal keto eating was the addition of the FODMAPs onions, mushrooms and cabbage.

I sometimes have ridiculously fast transit time with salad, but it doesn’t have as many negative other things happening along with it so I still eat salads. I’m picky though. Some treat me far worse than others.

Try seeing what your digestive life is like without any of the offenders. It will give you a better baseline for comparison. If you are okay with the trade offs, like I am for salad, it becomes a good way to include a food without over relying on it.

The conversation continues! Belly does not hurt. Pooping frequency and gas has gone way down on keto. After a night with a big salad or hefty serving of green beans, my frequency goes up the next morning and density goes down. I’m still experimenting but my body is getting rid of these two items very quickly. Broccoli isn’t as bad. It’s not affecting me, just something that was easy to notice compared to pre-keto when I was eating so much junk, I did not know what caused the excess poop! I was just curious everyone’s thoughts.

It could even be just part of the adaptation process?

“Poop” is the standard children’s euphemism in the U.S., so you can certainly use it. F(a)eces, stool, excrement, bowel movement are all acceptable as well. You can even call it shit, if you like, as long as you blur it out—we are not all that prissy, but this is supposed to be a family-friendly forum, after all.
