Hey everybody I’m just returning to a keto diet after a bad experience a few years ago when my stomach went toxic after about 2 months of keto diet. It was brutal and took me about a month to heal from. Fast forward to today and I’m about 4 days in and was hoping to avoid the past experience and was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Also thinking that a digestive enzyme supplement might help. If anyone wants to share their experience either with enzymes like lipo gold or with getting sick or having severe stomach toxicity symptoms after being in ketosis for a while I’d love to hear about it. cheers and thanks!
Lipase or lipo gold enzymes
I don’t have experience with either, but looking at your previous routines might help, too. For example if you were using salt on an empty stomach as electrolytes, consider switching to baking soda. Or maybe you were not getting enough electrolytes, etc. Some people do better with an enzyme, but try to look at the big picture. Also- welcome!
I tried a high animal fat diet, and used some enzymes. It was tricky find out when to use them, and I ended the experiment. I find I’m better with some fats (like pork fat) than others (like beef suet). Other “processed” fats, like butter or cacao butter don’t seem to cause me issues. I don’t know why.
wow, great information, I never considered that some fats are easier for some of us that others. Thanks for the insight.
Digestive enzymes help everybody, I don’t like the Enzymedica stuff simply because it’s overpriced. They’re good products, but overpriced.
I use NOW Super Enzymes which is a broad spectrum, and so is the Lipo Gold if you look at the ingredients. Also look into Betaine HCL, which is stomach acid, which most are low on anyway.
What do you mean by “went toxic”? If you did that thing where you looked for every reason under the sun to cram fat into everything, don’t do that. For most that’s problem solved right there. But either way digestive enyzmes are great to aid in digestion and improve nutrient absorption.
Digestive Enzymes are on my permanent supps list.
How do you know if you need them? What sort of signs or symptoms show up?
For many it’s not about need but about optimizing, the biggest ones being better nutrient absorption and reduced load on digestion. But no shortage of people are low on stomach acid and the enzymes we need to break down food, combination of crap that makes its way into us, and all the grown food being near dead nutrient wise from either being grown in dead soil or not in soil at all. On the animal side, they’re eating that as well, so getting the most out of stuff becomes more important.
…
Thanks for that. I would guess that better nutrient absorption could be measured somehow, but I’m puzzled about the reduced load.
Allow me to explain where I’m coming from on this. I can’t say “lifelong” but I needed antacids from about the time I was 20 for my whole life. Going from Tums or other tablets to stuff like Mylanta or Maalox and eventually Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prilosec.
A few years ago, call it 2022, I was on my annual checkup at my allergist. This doc had always had me diagnosed as having asthma, but I hardly ever needed any medication for it. I’d get a “rescue inhaler” carry it until it expired, and replace it. Yeah, maybe I’d use it once or twice over the years on “bad days”. During the visit he says there’s emerging research that shows some asthma cases come from acid reflux. Long story shortened, it turned out that’s what I had, and the cause of the reflux was a hiatal hernia. Given the timing it’s possible I had that hernia since I started taking more antacids 50 years ago.
I had the hiatal hernia repaired surgically back in January of '23 and the surgeon put in a LINX device that magnetically clamps the esophagus closed. I haven’t had more than 2 Tums in one day in three years. It literally changed my life. I’m pretty sure I’ve had one or two Tums tablets in the last month.
That leads me to wonder if the Super Enzymes, Lipo Gold or whatever do something as dramatic for you. Optimization is wonderful, but I can’t quite understand how it shows up. It’s not like I’m a rabid fan of lab tests, but the placebo effect is real and while I can see the viewpoint that goes, “I don’t care if it’s a placebo as long as I feel better” the details of living that way don’t sit well in my head.
While I’m interested in what’s going on, I’m not likely to go try to do anything if I can’t tell if it’s working.
That’s the way I am too.
That works for most things, but I’m guessing there are things it doesn’t work on. For instance, I’m making my own Natto now, because it’s high in vitamin K2 and nattokinase, both of which reportedly have benefits preventing or address atherosclerosis. How will I know if there’s a benefit there? I’m not sure. The only tests are tests for atherosclerosis, and I don’t get those very often.
A lot of it without testing is how you feel, but I do vitamin and nutrient panels yearly. Prior to me realizing most of the nutrients we think are in foods actually aren’t, I stepped up my supplemention game after learn how drastically being low on lots of different vitamins can have an effect. Then came mineral deficiencies, which can be way more drastic on methylation and hormone regulation. When I started on direct mineral supplementation, energy levels and sleep improved pretty dramatically.
I was also on PPI’s for a while before realizing how damaging they were. I had reflux issues and wasn’t aware at the time that most people’s reflux was from too little acid and not from too much. Without proper levels of HCL we don’t even break down stuff right, which also hurts the nutrient absorption of them.
You could always try the super “scientific” baking soda test when you get up in the morning of 1/4tsp of baking soda in a small amount of water. Within 2-3mins you should let out a burp that sounds and feels like it came up from your feet! If very little or no burp, your stomach acid is low.
