Libre Freestyle accuracy for predicting hbA1c

(Cathy Schroder) #1

So my GP suggested I wear a Libre Freestyle monitor for a while to help me iron out a few wrinkles with my blood sugar. I am having bloods drawn on Tuesday for my hbA1c on Tuesday, and I am now wondering just how accurate the reader’s prediction for the result will be.

Has anyone worn one for the three months prior to a test, and if so, how accurate was your result?

I haven’t personally ever used one but anecdotally on another forum I’m a member of people seem to have very varying experiences of the Libre some claiming it is wonderful and others almost that it is dangerously inaccurate.
Have you cross checked with finger prick tests regularly to see how accurate it is in your specific case?
Sometimes they seem to read very low if pressure has been applied to the patch during sleep by lying on it.
I think it will probably vary with individuals responses to measuring interstitial fluid rather than blood. Be interested to hear your results though.

So I got my results. The monitor predicted 4.8 but the actual result was 5.6. Still very good given what it was at it’s worst (10.8 I think), and 8.5 twelve weeks earlier, but not what I was hoping for, given the tremendous effort I made (I had three weeks on holiday in Canada in the middle there and still behaved myself). However it gives me something to aim for next time.

I’m pretty sure that giving up dairy, implementing a proper fasting regime and building muscle are all things that I can do to improve this result. On the plus side I show no remaining signs of insulin resistance - fasting insulin, lipids, liver enzymes all on the excellent side of normal. Even my cardiac calcium scan shows a very low risk of an event in the next ten years. As I was diagnosed with diabetes 17 years ago I’m pretty happy with that.
