Ketosis: you’re either in or out but are there any benefits to being in deeper levels of ketosis?
Level of ketosis
I’m not clear whether the weight loss is any faster. What I do know is for epilepsy, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, a very low GKI (glucose ketone index) is required. To get the GKI at therapeutic levels, low blood glucose and high ketones are required.
What kind of numbers? Would glucose of 53 and ketones of 4.7 be in that range?
I think it does but only within individuals. If I’m showing purple I’m losing weight, pink and I’m stalling or even gaining usually. However my husband never shows darker that pink and he’s almost always losing and FAST!
So just compare you colours to your own maximum, not somebody else’s. We are all leaking ketones into our pee at different rates. Some people stop entirely after they’re fat adapted, but I never do.

Glucose of 53 and ketones of 4.7 would be a GKI of 0.63, which would be extremely therapeutic and seemingly impossible to achieve, without the addition of MCT oil, etc.
This is a really good point! I wonder if that is the same for me. I usually eat between 30-50g of carbs per day but have noticed that I can eat 100g carbs and still remain in (light) ketosis, feeling all the mental and physical benefits. However I’m only averaging a weight loss of 1-1.5lb a week (I know that’s good but I have over 100lb to lose and am not ‘overeating’ keto foods, so would expect my weight loss to be more in the 2lb a week range) I wonder if I am also not able to drop weight ao easily at that level.
When I eat closer to 20g carbs the urine sticks show dark red/purple but 20g is so much less enjoyable for me… no milk in my tea, less vegetables than I like etc! I might give sub-20g a try for a couple of weeks and see how I get on.
Hmmm… I took two blood readings, one said 53 one said 66 I think. Two different meters. I don’t use MCT oil I just have a very small feeding window, slmost really OMAD and literally no other nutrients in the fasting window.
Yes, that would be in that range.
Calculate GKI:
Glucose/18 (to convert to mmol) : 54/18 = 3
Divide above value by ketones: 3/4.7 = .63
Short version, if your glucose (in mmol) is less than ketones then your GKI is under 1
