Level 8.0 & Sore throat

(Bren) #1

Hi y’all, it’s day 12 for me on Keto!
I got the strips a few days ago to help learn how my body is adapting. For the last 3 days I have used the test strips 1st thing in the morning and get level 8.0. I know rhis is high, but is it dangerously high? Does anyone have an explanation? I t does go down i.e. before bed i was 4.0 and when i got home late yesterday from a workout it was barely detectable.
Then for the last 2 mornings i’ve woken up with a sore throat, but I’m not sick nor have allergies. And I know i didn’t sleep with my mouth open. Has anyone heard of this happening in relation to Keto?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Bren

The level on the urine test strips isn’t significant. I presume that’s what you’re using, not the blood test?

Is it possible you are dehydrated? You might need to drink more water and get more salt. Eating Keto makes it harder for your body to stay hydrated.

Just a thought.

@Noapples4u
Yes, i am only using Keto strips.

@DiMo
Yes, i am probably dehydrated. I drink maybe 20oz coffee in the morning with 2 tbspns od whipping cream and 1 tbspn of Keto CBT oil.
Then i drink water with salt maybe 40oz plus a 12 oz carbonated water like la Croix.
So, not quite a gallon. Is a gallon enough? Or should i aim for 70 oz+?
Thanks so much!!!

A gallon of fluid (which is 128 ounces, by the way) doesn’t seem totally out of range. But my understanding is that coffee is actually dehydrating, so it shouldn’t count towards your fluid intake for the day.

Hydration needs vary quite a bit from person to person. I have health issues which limit my activity levels and I drink about 2-3 liters (64 to 96 ounces) of a DIY ketoaide a day (occasionally a little more). I add 1/2 tsp of pink Himalayan salt, 1/4 tsp of Lite pink Himalayan salt and 20 drops of liquid trace minerals to every liter. If I’m not fasting, I’ll add a packet of TrueLemon (dehydrated lemon powder) for flavor. Occasionally I’ll add some Crystal Light, for a treat!

If you’re bigger than me, are pretty active, or are outside in the heat a lot; you would probably need more than me.

Also, with regards to electrolytes, I take 500 mg of magnesium glycinate about 1/2 to 1 hour before bedtime.

Being dehydrated will also make your keto sticks darker. Another reason not to pay too much attention to them!

Diane, I think the effect, if any, is slight - caffeine is a mild diuretic, but if a person is somewhat consistent in their caffeine intake, then things change very little for them. The diuretic effect, even in people that aren’t used to caffeine, isn’t going to make them excrete more water than the coffee contains - the body can still retain what water it needs and get rid of the rest.

I am going to be sure i drink enough today!!:grin:

Thanks! I like my coffee :wink:

Doug, thanks for the information. As I am very intolerant to caffeine, my personal experience is more than a decade in my past. :grin:
