Lesson Learned on Carbs

(Hugh Walter Jennings) #1

Started my day with a blood ketone reading of .3 mmol.

Wasn’t expecting that but I think I know what I did. I’m becoming addicted to natural peanut butter. Yesterday after work I went to Trader Joe’s to stock up on Valencia peanut butter.

Ate a bit more that 3/4 jar from around 4:30 pm - 10:30 pm. Also ate a bag of riced cauliflower with garlic powder and EVOO.

I walked 11,000 plus steps yesterday.
I’m guessing the carbs did it.

I’ll fast today. Also hit the treadmill for a couple of 25 min sessions as well as a full body w/o on my old Health Rider. Pretty useful machine.

A friend gave me one. After I found out what they sell for I offered him a hundred bucks and he declined. Every once in awhile you’ll see one at the yard sale on the cheap. Not my video but the best one I’ve seen.

Edit : just checked again. Blood ketones .06

So it appears from your post that you are/were hypoglycemic. From what I understand, your blood glucose is low… very low. Are you diabetic. Are you in touch with health care? I hope you are ok. Maybe I am misunderstanding your situation?

I confess, I was puzzled by the post. It sounded more like binge eating being more of a problem than anything. 3/4 of a jar of peanut butter is a lot of peanut butter. I eat a little but not large amounts of it. Same with riced cauliflower. For me, neither of those are stand-alone foods but rather something more resembling a condiment or side dish.

But I might have missed something. I know I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer…

Nuts are one of those things that many people have problems with. They are easy to overeat. I avoided them for years because of that. A “serving” of nuts for me was multiple handfuls. But that is the case with bacon, too, for me: I can eat bacon and eat it and eat it…

I have learned to eat fewer nuts when I do eat them, but it’s taken a long time.

Hi Cathy, it was a typo. I fixed it. I wrote blood glucose but it was blood ketones @ .3mmol.

Anyhow, my blood glucose is fine. Fasting always below 100 and seldom over 100 post meal. a1c was 5.0 Oct 1st

Fasting blood glucose this morning is 87.

I apologize my for the slow reply. I actually entered the text for the reply a few hours after you posted but forgot to send it. When I logged in a couple of minutes ago saw it as a draft in the reply box.

Hi Brian, I meant .6 blood ketones, not glucose. And yes 3/4 of a jar is way too much peanut butter lol.

It’s not uncommon for me to eat a little less than half a jar per day though. I’m cutting back to 2-3 tbls per day.

Hi Bob, I bought a few varieties of nuts couple of days ago. I plan to limit consumption of them to one serving or a little less.

I’m checking my blood ketones daily and finding that the day after I limit my net carbs to 10-12 grams I’m getting the higher blood ketone readings.

I’m still tweaking my diet/food choices. Goal is to keep my GKI in the optimal range, and do so not at the expense of muscle loss.

My “nut solution” (which I also use for other super-palatable foods) is a little bowl accompanied by permission to eat as much as I want of something else. Take all of it away from the pantry. E.g. I felt a desire for them, so I have about 2T of cashews and a pint of cottage cheese sitting next to me. When I finish the nuts I can have as much cottage cheese as I want if I’m still hungry/ nibbly. I’m pretty neutral about cottage cheese, It’s not a trigger food I’m likely to pleasure eat past satiety but it keeps me from going off in search of more nuts. I’ve also used plain goat yogurt, and sauerkraut this way. Anything low carb that falls in the mid zone between “I love this” and “ugh, what else do we have” will do. Maybe you could not-tempt yourself with a can of sardines.

No worries. I love peanut butter, too. I tend to have it less regularly, though, not every day. I tend to be careful about eating too much of it in part because we grow our own peanuts for most of our peanut butter and the supply is limited. It takes a lot of work to grow and process the peanuts in just one jar of peanut butter. Probably helps me to moderate which is a good thing.

But… peanut butter from our own home grown peanuts is second to none! Financially worth it? Not a chance. But good? Oh yeah.

Gosh, been there, done that. Turns out peanuts are not nuts, they’re legumes. Carbmanager says peanut butter has 3.8 net carbs/oz. Don’t know what size the jar was but 3/4 of the jar, assuming it was, say, 16 oz is 12oz. 12x3.8 =45.6 net carbs. For me, with my pre-diabetes I have learned I have to keep my carbs under 25/day to keep a BHB of 1.0 or higher. If I ate 45.6 carbs in one day, my BHB would be 0.3 the next morning too. I have to avoid nuts, I can eat one or two ounces of walnuts per day because they aren’t “hedonic” for me. I can stop at 2oz, easily. Macadamia, cashews, peanuts, forget about it. 2oz doesn’t satisfy me, it makes me crazy for more. Better not to have the first bite, that’s what I’ve learned.

@KernCanyonCamper It’s a 16 oz jar of Trader Joe’s no salt added

I ate ~ 10. 5 servings
73.5 grams carbs - 31.5 grams fiber = 42 net carbs
152.5 grams fat
84 grams protein
1,890 calories

It’s keto but also a bit much. That’s a lot of fat.
I won’t be doing that again lol

I’m going to grind the nuts and sprinkle them on my red onion, bell peppers, celery, arugula salads (no dressing and about 1/2 serving of each veggie to hold the carbs in check. Just to boost the fiber, protein, fat, omega 3’s in the mix a bit.

All I’ve eaten today is about 4 tablespoons of the peanut butter and a serving of edamame pasta w/ EVOO.
