I’ve been very good about reading labels on most things I buy at the grocery store. Recently I made a soup using beef bone broth with thinly shaved ribeye that I simmered for a couple of hours. It was really delicious but after entering the broth that I bought in to my carb manager app I realized that it had caramelized sugar syrup, yeast and msg. Things I want no part of. Although the amounts were very small I learned a lesson and will never assume anything when it comes to what is put in to our food.
Lesson learned about food labels
I literally have a shaker of MSG Don’t worry about ignoreable amounts of stuff, they’re just that.
I agree with you there. I was just surprised to find those things in broth. I’ll definitely be keeping a closer eye on those things going forward.
I always read the ingredient list and nutrition facts before buying. I was going to buy bone broth once, but it had too much sugar and junk. I don’t remember the carb content, but I do remember that it was unacceptably high.
A quick Internet search shows nutrition labels from various brands of bone broth. Carbs range from 0 to 5 grams per cup.

OK SO this post got f’d up LOL
to the OP, yea read labels that work ONLY for what you want, and don’t eat what ya don’t, do you as you need
you saw ----now change what you buy
I think 95% of the boxed, bagged, or canned stuff in the grocery store has sugar in it.
Yes, I’ve been online reading the labels for most all the brands that my local stores have. Pretty much all have the things in them that I don’t want. I did find a much more suitable brand online, quite pricey but I placed an order to see if it’s something I will like
For me broth is the only thing I buy that’s in a box. I’d love to make my own I just don’t usually have the time because of my work schedule
I buy certain things. Taco seasoning (with the second ingredient being maltodextrin), for instance. Can I make my own? Yes. Does it take a ridiculously long time, and do we go through a ton of this? Yes.
I also buy some “keto” goods. Costco has some not bad ice cream bars I’ll eat every once in a while.
I’ll also buy prepared salmon, prepared chicken, and similar from Costco. Sometimes, we don’t have time to make every single meal from scratch.
broth ain’t on my carnivore plan.
I get it for those who love it but liquid doesn’t come into play with ‘my food eating plan’
on carnivore, if you decide zc challenge is for you forget the broth, we eat food for healing, we don’t drink to limit or control our food intake which can then limit our nutrient healing food from the meats.
just a chat not coming at ya LOL but if one wants carnivore, there is new guidelines that work for us and ‘drinks’ is water and that is what we do or coffee of course if ya don’t dump it and go all in…that darn coffee is something so many won’t drop into carnivore but that is a personal call of course
again, just a chat on the next step
broth etc is a ‘carnivore food’ but it is not carnivore recommended so…just some thoughts on it
That’s good information to know, since starting keto I only have a single cup of coffee with mct. Once I decide that I’m all in for the January challenge I will drop that one cup. Again I really appreciate the information.
come seek out the zc group here, tons of info and us on this plan and if you wanna learn more, just jump on in
An instapot makes great bone broth, in a fraction of the time compared to a slow cooker. I use broth to deglaze the pan when I’m done cooking meat, then I reduce it in the pan to make a delicious sauce.
Any reason not to make your own beef or chicken broths? An instantpot makes it very easy and much quicker than doing it in the oven.
