Less than 1000 calories a day

(Ene Adrian) #1

Hi all,

Please excuse my english , it’s not my primary language .
Started 2 weeks ago to eat Keto.I am using Myfitnesspal to record all my meals , and 6 days ago i realised that i am eating less and less every day and i don’t feel hungry, but i drink around 4 l of water daily
For example , my meals today are a total of 676 calories.
I have the bad habit in taking my weight every morning after i go to toilet and before i have my coffee and i can see an average of 0.5 kg gone.
I am 36 years, 1.87 m and 14 days ago i was 106.6 kg and this morning the scale showed

  • 98.7kg , 28.2 BMI,29.0 Body fat .
    Is this normal ?

I quickly learned that “normal” is a relative term, according to all the different experiences of long-time keto practices. I also lost my appetite really quickly. I thought, hurray!!! But then I soon realized I was not eating enough. I only ate when I was truly hungry or had a craving. It’s a process. You’ll eventually find that balance. Plus, all of us eat too little sometimes and too much sometimes. Just stay the course, try to increase your calories while keeping those carbs low, and you’ll find your way. You got this!

Keto is carb restriction not calorie restriction. Sub 1000 Cala per day is a recipe for disaster. Some of us do not have reliable hunger signals. If you’re not hungry eating sub 1000 Cals per day for several days, eat more whether you want to or not. This from someone who has not experienced more than slight and fleeting hunger for almost 4 years.

I just ate more than that for dinner, you’re not eating enough. Start eating more before you slow down your metabolism for good. Most people should never eat less than 1500 cals/day. A women maybe 1200. But that’s the bottom. You’re eating less and less because your body is slowing down.

Welcome to the forum Adrian. Your English is good. What is your first language?

Why are you doing the ketogenic diet?

If it is for body fat loss consider these ideas.

One needs to feed their body to convince it to lose excess body fat in a healthy way.

With the ketogenic diet the majority of daily available energy comes from dietary fat initially. Once fat adapted and in a low insulin and glucagon dominant metabolic state, then the body starts to ‘feed’ on stored body fat. First up one needs to convince their metabolism that they are not starving and that they are getting good nutrition.

It’s a real trap, an unhealthy one to eat too little, in terms of nutrition not volume, at the start of the process. It’s exciting to find the hunger ‘off switch’, but that is a strong indicator that it is best to source and eat the most nutritionally dense foods that can be found because the appetite so rapidly disappears (for some people).

One solution is increasing daily physical activity within the tasks of the day. It has a scientific term… That will regularly deplete liver glycogen in an ongoing manner, as the muscles will be asking for more energy from blood glucose, fatty acids, and ketones (if they are being generated by the liver). The physical activity will help maintain a good base metabolic rate, build fitness and strength, as well as provide a perfect natural appetite stimulant to eat those nutritionally dense foods.

If you would like, please describe the food you are eating. That will create the most useful responses.

The weight loss you describe is typical. It is often regarded by many health commentators as not normal. It’s usually associated with initial water weight loss. That 4 litres of water per day is more easily flowing through you rather than being bound with internal glycogen and salts.

Eat well. KCKO.

When we drastically change our woe, we may experience such things sometimes but it’s no good for longer term. I personally never have it longer term as my body always realizes it hates starving but some people can do it for long - even if it’s harmful for them. Don’t trust the lack of hunger, it doesn’t mean it’s good for you. You eat way too little, I can’t imagine it ends well if you continue. Even not eating at all would be better (probably. maybe your body would hate it, who knows? mine prefers eating every day even if it’s unusually low for me for a while) but that’s not for long term either, of course.

You don’t need hunger to eat or do you? Many of us eat without hunger as we just don’t get hungry or very rarely. It’s a tad annoying unless we have some other reliable urge (fortunately I have. I got more sensitive to the signs of my body during the last years) but if we must eat according to time and tracking, well… It’s better than starving. Some people don’t recognize the problem early enough for some reason… But looking at your calories, it is actually plain you don’t eat enough… Change it somehow. Eat more meals or less satiating food or just don’t stop so easily, add extra fat or whatever. I am sure it’s not so hard to find a solution in most cases. (I don’t even understand how anyone can eat so super tiny… People are fascinating.)

This is a low carb way of eating. Replace carbs with fat. Increase your caloric intake with fat. Do you measure your blood ketones? I have been doing this stuff for just over 10 years now. I never feel hungry, ever. Be careful of your high water consumption. It can disrupt your electrolyte balance. I have found that over 2-3 days you should increase your consumption/calories from fat (70-90%) and be ok. The weight scales can be deceiving. Are you losing fat or muscle mass? Are you changing holes on your belt? Low caloric consumption will at least in my case down-regulate your metabolism over time. In the short term you will lose weight, but not long term. Increase your calories. One last point, go get a blood test from your Dr. in a month or so. Some people on the Keto program see a spike in their Triglycerides. This is not good.

I wonder what your macros are. 676 kcal… I often get more calories from protein alone (and it’s much for me but you surely need way more than I do) and fat is essential too… So even just using some minimal amount of fat and protein, your numbers hardly/barely add up… There is a chance you eat way too little protein and that’s quite bad. But if you eat barely enough protein, what do you eat? Lean protein only? Why?
What if you try various fat/protein ratios to see if it helps with your calories? Different food items? I can be very happy when I manage to eat little myself but not to that point… I start to add easy to eat not too satiating calorie-dense food in this situation. Drinking calories is often much easier…

We know that restricted caloric intake is the signal to the body that there is a famine going on. While it is possible to lose weight by restricting calories, the net result is usually that hunger eventually overcomes the dieter, and then the person regains not only the weight lost, but an addition 5 kilos or so. A study of former contestants on the television programme, The Biggest Loser, showed that they had not only regained the weight they lost, but their metabolism had been permanently slowed.

If you are really not hungry, you might be okay for a while at 1000 calories or less, but you might want to try eating a bit more than you want at each meal, to see what happens. Many people on these forums who were in your situation report that eventually their appetite returned, and they ended up eating more. Many people report that their fat loss did not really begin until they started eating more, not less.

Welcome to the forum and to Keto =).

From my own personal experience with Keto, I would suggest to you to try to eat more and don’t worry so much about your calories, but in keeping your carbs to 20 grams or less a day =).

Good luck in your Keto journey.

i don’t feel hunger when i eat, i am trying to stick to 3 meals a day ( most days i am working from home)

After reading all the comments, i decided to increase the calories on each meal.As other user suggested , i can add more fat / more protein and maybe before bed i can have a snack of nuts.

As others have said, ‘This is a high-fat diet, not a caloric reduction diet.’ Increase your caloric intake over 4-6 days. Otherwise, you are just asking for a boatload of problems.
