Leg and foot cramps!

(Amanda) #1

Hi, I’ve started to get cramps in my calves and toes this last week or so, nothing painful just a quick tickle then as soon as I move it goes. I’m drinking plenty water so I’m not dehydrated, I’m thinking I’m missing something from my diet but not sure what! Any advice?
TIA x

With less glucose and glycogen holding onto water, your kidneys start to function normally by excreting more water. The water flushes out a lot of other stuff you want going out, but also electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc. Cramps are a signal that your electrolytes are getting depleted. So you have to up your intake. I’d start with sodium. Redmond’s Real Salt and Himalayan Pink Salt are both popular because they also contain trace elements. Just add more salt to your foods and eat more foods with higher salt content. With what you’ve described, that may be all you need to do. If not, you can search this forum for “electrolytes” and you will find numerous discussions on the topic and various ideas for dealing with supplementing other electrolytes.

I take a mineral supplement daily in the form of a pill.

I use no-salt (potassium) on most foods and take 2 magnesium tabs before bed. I used to get excruciating calf cramps!
