Lansoprazole..PPI' in general (Prevacid)

Hi…not a doctor but have done some research on this since starting keto and am now not taking it at all.I was prescribed 30mg a day 9 years ago and told I would need it for life. Never reviewed by my GP, I am in the UK…
Two years ago at a routine eye test my Optician said she was referring me straight away to the eye hospital, scary stuff…there they did extensive tests and told me I had had a stroke!
Less than 24 hours later I am hooked up to a heart monitor for 72 hours have had scans etc and am awaiting news. This came in the form of…we can’t fond anything wrong, your heart is fine, no build up in your arteries so take this blood thinner and these statins and we are discharging you to your Dr. No further action needed!
After a week I went to my Dr to ask some more questions, like why a statin when my cholesterol was not high? Luckily she agreed with that and so I don’t take them. Again I asked how I could have had a stroke without knowing and what caused it.
She was unable to answer why after going over the tests with me but at no point reviewed all my other meds. She said small strokes could happen and people may just have a headache or some were symptomless!
Not sure why I waited to do my research but about 2 months ago I read up on this drug…says should only be prescribed for short term use and can cause or contribute to strokes in higher doses of 30mgs a day…
I stopped them immediately, few rough gastro days but now taking ACV daily and a more potent probiotic to get my gut flora back up and working!
No gastro issues now at all…I know I can’t prove this, my Dr said ah well, not enough research start taking them again but I have said no, not taking that risk.
I am working so hard to heal my body through Keto and things are improving, less inflammation , better sleep etc etc so am trusting that this lifestyle will see me through.

Just a cautionary tale in case you or a loved one are taking it long term…:handshake:

Very interesting. I had been taking Omeprazole for many years pre-keto, as well as a statin and a number of antihypertensives.
About 3 years ago I had a car accident, one minute I was driving and the next I was aware that I was sitting in the back of an ambulance. I had been approaching a roundabout with traffic lights, which luckily meant I was going very slowly, I remember changing gear and then nothing. Apparently I had just blacked out, played ping pong through the trees and smashed the traffic lights out! Wrote my car off too. I was totally unhurt and no-one could ever tell me what happened. Every test was negative but they concluded that I had a mini stroke (TIA) and gave me Apixaban. I have never had an episode before or since.
My GP took me off my HRT, (almost as traumatic as the accident!) but never mentioned my Omeprazole! I have gradually taken myself off all my meds in the past 15 months, except the Apixaban…mmm…just a little nervous of that one!
But your post is the first time I have heard about Omeprazole being implicated and I have just been reading. Thank you for the insight.

By the way @MarkGossage , do you remember when the traffic lights were out at Grove Lodge Roundabout for 6 months 3 years ago? Yep, that was me. A lot of people were very grateful to me for the improved traffic flow!:hugs:

I do indeed and yes the traffic flow was so much better…

However I won’t ask you to do it again!

Haha! It was my moment of fame

An expensive one by the sound of it!

How interesting…another ‘no explanation’ scenario…thanks for replying and so glad you were not injured.
Through the mighty internet my searches have definitely suggested they may be a factor but my Dr basically dismissed the research that I showed her.

No injuries and improved traffic flow…small mercies!

People generally find that PPI’s are not necessary in ketosis, and given these stories, I’d certainly be wary about taking them over the long term. One of the problems my mother faced was that people would put her on medications and forget to monitor or stop prescribing them as her condition changed. I fully believe that some of the things she experience towards the end were the result of dosages that should have come down, or interactions between medications, because I couldn’t get anyone to take responsibility for overseeing the totality of her prescriptions.

I took Omeprazole for GORD. When I started Keto I had indigestion and wondered if I just couldn’t tolerate the fat. I think it was Dr Berry who said, stop your PPI, hydrochloric acid is designed to digest fat! I stopped taking it and can’t remember suffering since.

Sadly this seems to be more prevalent these days, it seems it is up to the patient or loved one to query or monitor.
So sorry to hear about your Mum’s experiences :handshake:

It was Dr Berry’s comments on Youtube that made me research and stop them too! So glad you have no recurring GORD, mine is also gone. I truly believe that keto slowly heals.

This is an up to date one
