Lack of sleep cause carb cravings?

(Crippie) #1

I encountered something interesting this morning.

Last night my 11 month old daughter had a very active night, and as a result i only got about 2 hours of very unrestful sleep.

When I woke up I had some of the WORST carb cravings I have had since first starting this way of eating. I still feel them now and it is bad! I have not had a carb craving in weeks! I know I didn’t have any hidden carbs the day before as all I had was a BPC in the morning and then a ribeye with kerrygold for dinner.

Could it be my body is so down on sleep and energy that it “knows” carbs would give quick energy to get me up and going in my sleepy state so it craves them worse than ever before?

Anyone else experience something similar?

Lack of sleep for me will result EVERY time in increased hunger and cravings for carbs. Sleep deprivation leads to increases in hunger hormones.

Yea, I have been low on sleep before without much issue, my BPC usually does the trick. But basically pulling an all nighter I feel broken. Like they are HORRIBLE cravings! Luckily I carpooled to work and have no vehicle or I may do something stupid and break down and go binge.

I’m a firefighter/paramedic on a 24 on/48 off schedule. Some shift days I might get 2 or 3 hours of sleep. After those nights I do suffer from carb cravings. I always keep some food at the station to battle these cravings. Triple cream brie and salami always seem to do the trick for me.

If I ever have carb cravings i will usually just overeat fat for that day. Im talking between 1000-2500 calories over maintenance all keto or (carnivore for me) this os ONLY WHAT I DO… im not giving advice. I told myself some time ago that its better to splurge a moderately on foods that fit my lifestyle rather than wrecking all of my hard work and dedication for stuff thats just going to make me feel like shit anyways. Dont give in to the cravings… you KNOW you will regret it!

I usually iIF, but if I get less than 7 hours I don’t even try…HUNGRY…all day long.

This is so helpful!! I unintentionally got up at 4:30 today and by 9am I was having hunger pangs when I normally make it to 3pm or even later with no issues.

I have never thought of this. I try to do IF as well, usually an 18/6. And find some days incredibly easy but others very hard, perhaps the hard days are when i get less sleep the night before, never paid attention to that before, but will have to now.

Yes, sleep deprivation does it for me too.
Best coping mechanism i have found (so far) is to eat. A big keto protein/fat breakfast. And then something like bulletproof coffee to keep me going.
Its the next best thing to crawling back into bed and catching up on the zzzzs.

Maybe it’s the phase of the moon or something because I’m about 9 or 10 weeks in and have never had carb cravings like this before! I am trying to hard to fight it but all I can think about is breaded stuff or potato chips. I’d go make myself some crunchy cheese crisps or something but I have to stay off dairy and I can’t stomach pork rinds so I’m sitting here chewing my nails. Sweets won’t do it right now… and even bacon isn’t helping. I want salty crunch or breaded seafood!

But I know exactly what you mean!!

I just experienced some interrupted sleep as well
Back to back nights

Some water w lemon helped
Followed by some black coffee in the morning
