L-ornithine supplement?

(Envy Boo) #1

I couldn’t find any threads or topics about L-ornithine supplement. Does anyone take on the Keto or Carnivore diet? It supposely in your urea cycle, converts ammonia to urea in the liver. I guess its best taken before you sleep as some people wake up feeling refreshed and no grogginess. Ornithine is an amino acid. Do we normally have high amounts of ammonia on keto/carni before we wake up? Any comments?

New to me. So many are out there that begin with L-whatever. For a while I took a magnesium pill with L-threonate. Also supposed to aid with sleep. But I’ve since gone off it.

I was taking it to reduce cortisol:

I did not like it, as it seemed to cause side effects for me (most likely, heart palpitations), so I stopped taking it and threw the bottle away.

The only way to know is to try it.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #4

You can overload your uric acid cycle with too much protein, but the amount required is quite large. If you eat within the recommended range of 1.0-1.5 g protein per kg of lean body mass per day, 2.0 g max, you should never have to worry about ammonia, assuming you don’t have some weird medical condition. You probably don’t need it, unless your physician has told you to take it.

Magnesium L Threonate is the only form that crosses the blood/brain barrier.

I tried it but didn’t get any benefit so stopped.

(Robin) #7

Is that good or bad?

(Allie) #8

It’s a good thing as it is the best type to help with sleep, you and I have talked about it already as I recently started using it. This is a modified type of magnesium specifically designed to cross the blood / brain barrier.

Everybody is different on Ammonia levels, that comes down to your protein intake, your activity levels and whether you’re able to use that level of protein and just your metabolism as a whole. It definitely works though, for a while I had my protein intake decently high when I was doing 2 a days at the gym, I dropped the second one for a while and noticed after a couple days that my gym back started smelling like ammonia, clearly with the reduced workload my protein was too high. Took L-Ornithine and in 2 days it was gone.

It’s good. Here are a few things it can assist the brain with:

  • acute brain injury
  • addictions
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • anxiety
  • attention disorders
  • bipolar disorder
  • dementia
  • depression
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • schizophrenia
  • seizures

Yep, we did talk about it, you’re right.
See? I need those brain benefits, obviously :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
But the l-threonate didn’t touch my cramps.

And like your Shawn Stevens said… choose sleep first. I’m anxious for that book.

It will be well worth the wait I’m sure! Such an easy read, info flows right into your mind and stays there :grinning:

Are you referring to Magnesium L Threonate or what OP was asking about L-ornithine? Or are they related compounds?

(Rebecca ) #14

I was responding to someone mentioning Magnesium L Threonate.
