A point that Alan Savory and Peter Ballerstedt make is that plant-crop agriculture destroys the homes of small mammals and birds, both when the soil is turned over, and to some extent during harvesting as well. Not to mention how ruminant agriculture benefits the soil. Much of the world’s agricultural land is unsuitable for crop-growing and can only be used for ruminant agriculture. So the moral and environmental issues are not all on the side of vegetarianism.

Granted, the factory farming of meat is an ethical, moral, and ecological disaster. But there are humane and ecologically sound ways of raising animals for meat. Our ancestors used those methods for millennia, and we should return to them.
