I am a grandma to a beautiful baby girl toddler. Ordinarily when people come over, I serve the same keto food that I eat. That includes my grandbaby when she and my son come over just for lunch.
However, my grand baby sometimes stays with me for a day or two.
My post may be obvious to some, but is just a reminder that for those not in ketosis, carbs are their fuel. I plan to have some frozen single serving containers of carb foods such as mac and cheese on hand for her if she is here for one or more days, because little kids can’t do without fuel. She can still eat what I am eating, but in addition needs the carb side dishes.
Kids
How about fruits and vegetables instead of mac and cheese? Or sweet potatoes. Some foods with carbs but still real food. My kids (8 and 9.5) eat some of what I eat (they are pretty picky) and I also have plenty of real food carbs for them to enjoy. Kids usually like cheese cut up into chunks too. And bacon! My girls love bacon so I always have a supply of that for them!
My wife and I eat keto, so we feed them whatever we eat. They also get regual “kid stuff” like pasta and lots of fruit, but I want them to get used to eating the keto alternatives like mashed cauliflower/ riced cauliflower, zuccini noodles, etc. That way they can grow up eating the good stuff and if they decide to go keto as adults it will be easy.
Kids are able to switch up between burning carbs and fat with ease. We lose that ability the older we get. I would just find her what you eat.
Sheri, I do have veggies and actually canned a ton of sweet taters at Thanksgiving, but she is going through a picky phase. My own kids went through a similar phase when they are young, both now eat a wide array of foods, one is actually a cheese-o-phile (can’t think of the fancy work for it right now) and spends more for a pound of some cheeses than I spend on a whole meal.
I can’t I gather this information from the podcast and talks giving on the low carb Australia youtube channel.
Mine sure can be picky at times so I understand. I just don’t get it when they seem to love something, several times, then the next time you give them the same exact thing, they announce they don’t like it. I haven’t figured that one out yet, lol!
I have not heard the podcasts Stan, and because it is a very young person I’m going to assume that they like we have the capacity to obtain energy from both carbs and fat, but a switch needs to be gradual rather than sudden. That means to me that I do need to have some carbs available, but in addition, they have to be carbs she will eat because she is picky.
Here is my cite, from a site I respect:
I can understand that.
I do know my own kids eat pretty much keto when they are home (so every night and weekends) and eat carbs at school. They don’t seem to have any issues
My youngest is a picky eater. She will skip whole meals sometimes. No ill affects.
If you can find them, Cybele’s Free to Eat noodles are AMAZING. They are made from veggies, and taste and feel like regular noodles. I get them in my organic section of Kroger
@Lucille we use a noodle maker that you twist the zucchini through to make noodles. They are pretty cheap! Or you can buy them from places like Whole Foods.
I have several zoodle makers. The one I love the most is an attachment to my kitchen aid stand mixer that I got at Costco for $30. My second favorite is a julienne blade that I got at Amazon for under $9
