Kids and Keto Question

(Meghan Cleary O'reilly) #1

Just curious what people think about kids and keto/LCHF. I don’t push anyone else in my household to do keto but over the past two years I have slowly dwindled down the junk I buy and nobody seems to care. My son however sees me and has decided to cut out all sugar, and processed food. It actually started when he watched the documentary Super Size Me in school- that was a year and a half ago and he won’t eat fast food which is awesome. My whole family has given it up. My concern is that my son eats a very low carb diet and he is almost 15 years old, 5’11" and only weighs about 110 pounds or 49 kg. He also runs cross country which is miles of running and hard workouts each day and I worry that he is not getting the fuel he needs. He has lost a little weight since track started and he is probably under 110. I’m trying not to harass him but I explained that to be healthy he needs to eat extra calories when he is running 5+ miles and doesn’t have an ounce of fat to burn for fuel. I should add that he has made comments like “I have to watch my calories” or “I have had enough salt for the day”. So I have been adding loads of healthy fats to his diet, adding some sea salt, and feeding him lots of meats. He will eat baked potatoes and some fruit and veggies. Its funny… I am ecstatic that he is so healthy and mindful of his eating with cutting out sugar but he takes it a little too far. Just curious if anyone has experienced anything similar at home?

Kids shouldn’t fast, but keto is great for them. What you want to watch out for is making sure they aren’t loading up on fast at home, then loading up on carbs at school or when they’re out with friends. The combo of high fat AND high carb is…well, the SAD

I’m not sure if he’s be too old for it, but you might want to consider the book “Fat Head Kids”
You can find it on Amazon

It end to disagree with the fact that kids shouldn’t fast!! While I wouldn’t necessarily agree with fasting for weight loss purposes, my children fast each year in observance of Ramadan, and we have no problems!!

When I started Keto my kids, ages 11and 15 decided on their own to start with me!! I was grateful to have the support of others in my house doing it, and I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised with how well they have done with it. I am not as strict with them as I am with myself, as they are after all, kids!! My older son plays :football: and he says he feels better when he carb loads before games, so he does that!! I think there are precautions you have to take with kids on keto, just like any other WOE, but it’s been a great choice for my kids so far!!

He’s 5’11", 150. He does not need to fast. For him, it’s go more paleo, sweet potatoes, etc. He has to get over his fear of salt though.

Damn I hate phones. I’d, not it’s.

Don’t kids wait until their a little older / pre-teen to observe fasting durning Ramadan?

Either way, you’re referring to a pretty light intermittent fast being from sunrise to sunset. IN GENERAL, I’ll stick to saying kids shouldn’t fast.

Between the phone and my fat fingers, I do it all the time :joy:

Oh yes definitely. I know he is not eating carbs at school. His friends laugh at his boring lunches. I also send him with lunch because he refuses to eat the junk in the cafeteria. Its really pretty incredible how strict he is since he’s a kid. But I just want to make sure he’s eating enough. He is sooo skinny it freaks me out.

Oh thanks I’ll check that out!

no sorry he’s 5’11" 110 pounds. And he’s actually less now. He has def lost weight since Cross Country has started.

Oh gosh no fasting- he is skinny enough as it is. The other day he walked out of his room with no shirt on. We could see every rib and a six pack tummy even as skinny as he is. Then my hubby said- OMG I can see your heart beating- put your shirt on. I thought he was kidding but then I saw it. That’s how thin he is. I was very skinny and underweight as a kid but this is a whole other level of skinny.

Maybe introduce him to Golden Corral. That seemed to help me put on weight :joy:

Hah!!!

I wish I could get my family on the keto train!! Good job for that one! He’s not restricting anything right? Maybe protein and fat shakes for extra calories/fuel

(Amy Ramadan) #17

No I wasn’t suggesting that he fast, I was just commenting on someone’s reply that they didn’t think kids should fast!!

(Meghan Cleary O'reilly) #18

Yes I was thinking shakes! Thanks gonna try that!

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #19

I used to make shakes for my little one, now 2, when she was around 15-18 months old. She was falling off the charts for weight.

Ingredients:
1 Can coconut milk
1 Avacado
4-6 tbsp peanut butter

Optional:
Vanilla extract to taste
Small amount of chocolate powder (low carb)
