Kidney Stone preventative

As a prelim, I am not really overweight, but would like to lose about 15-20# or so. Not diabetic. No medical issues really except borderline high blood pressure. Mid 60s.

About 2-3 years ago I did a carnivore diet for a week as an experiment and I felt great.

Several months ago, I decided to give Keto a run. So, after the initial phase, my blood pressure dropped to normal and I settled in and like it for the most part. But occasionally I do like to have a drink of scotch.

I was on Keto for 2 months. Basically Keto coffe in the morning with eggs and either Turkey bacon or regular bacon.
Lunch - Meat, low carb vegis and a keto bomb snack for desert.
Sometimes nuts for a snack.
Dinner, usually just meat, and or maybe a sandwickh with keto breadand a keto bomb snack for desert.

I seem to have a fairly high tolerance for carbs and best I could tell, my limit was around 40-50 net carbs.

About 5 weeks in a got a kidney stone. Cant remember the exact condition and what I ate and drank.

8 weeks in one night I drank about 1/2 pint of scotch and think I got dehydrated, and the next mornign another kidney stone, so I went off Keto for a while and now am on a regular semi-low carb diet.

I am going to do this for a month or two then try Keto again, but I would like to take some supplements to avoid and more kidney stones.

I do drink a lot of water. I usually have a glass by my side most of the time.

Sounds like oxalate dumping. Try eating small amounts of foods high in oxalates (like raw spinach) and slowly ween off them. Going from high oxalates to zero oxalates can cause oxalate crystals to build up in the kidneys as your body frantically tries to get rid of them. Drink a lot of water during this weening off period as your body needs to flush them out.

One thing I find that helps – apple cider vinegar.

When I start feeling a little pain in the kidney area, I make up an ACV drink – 1 tbsp ACV (with “the mother”), 1 tbsp lemon juice, 16 ounces of sparkling water. I also use the lower back massager and heating unit of my recliner.

For a day or two afterward, I’ll get little sand-like particles in my urine.

If you try this, be sure to drink it with a straw so that the drink doesn’t wash over your teeth. Taken frequently, the acidic nature can take its toll on tooth enamel.

As Dr. Annette Bosworth (“Dr. Boz”) explains in one of her YouTube videos, the ketogenic diet did not give you the kidney stone; rather, what happened was that an existing stone shrank enough to start moving around a bit and causing pain.

Her advice is to either get ultrasound treatment to break up the stone, or just wait it out (assuming you can) till the stone shrinks enough to be passed. Either way, if you don’t want more stones, returning to a carb-heavy diet is not the solution.

Find out what type of stone to get the correct treatment.

Most common is calcium oxalate.

Magnesium citrate. The citrate helps prevent calcium oxalate stones from forming. Man, they hurt .

Usually it takes a lot longer than 5 weeks for a noticeable kidney stone to form, so chances are it was in the making a long time before you changed your way of eating.

I used to get one every year or so before I went grain/sugar free about 5 years ago, and haven’t had one since.

My grain/sugar free way of eating just sort of evolved into a Keto way of eating before I Knew that " Keto " was a thing…
