Hi folks, I feel I can ask this in this forum without fear of upsetting anyone. I was wondering what level of carbs say in a day (friends wedding) would kick you out of ketosis. I plan on getting back on the horse the following day but the wedding itself will be tricky to avoid delicious carby food. Plus I don’t want to.
Kicking out of ketosis
It’s difficult to say as the crab tolerance varies in individuals. I think you’re better off preparing to deal with the crabs instead so some IF before hand and plan a decent amount of exercise to deplete muscle glycogen the day after.
Echoing that carbohydrate tolerance changes from person to person, it is hard to say what might kick someone else out of ketosis, but I can’t get much above 40 grams before I’m kicked out, so I keep it at or below 20 grams as much as possible.
20 grams of carbohydrate is easily exceeded when eating regular foods as might be seen at a wedding.
Dr. Peter Attia and even Timothy Ferriss have discussed how to eat carbs in such a way that they are more likely to be burned for energy or used to replete glycogen stores and Dr. Attia even reports that he was able to stay in ketosis even eating cake at his daughter’s birthday party.
However the trick is to deplete muscle and liver glycogen through significant physical exercise. Dr. Attia did it with a workout before the party and Tim Ferriss did it with short resistance workouts about 60-90 minutes before and after. Tim Ferriss’ exercises are simple enough to be done anywhere, but I don’t think they are enough to stay in ketosis when eating cake, but “accidental” carbs encountered in typical foods could be counteracted.
That being said, I struggled with avoiding carby foods for a long time and would eat them at various events and it was how bad they made me feel that’s helped me avoid them over time, so if you do indulge at a wedding, just use it as a learning experience for the next event.
If you really don’t want to eat the carbs, then it’s about preparing in advance both mentally and “physically” in the sense that you need to have polite ways to respond to people as well as bring your own keto-friendly foods and don’t be embarrassed to whip out some purse bacon or butter!
Good luck and KCKO.
This is key, you’re just going to have to experiment on yourself. To keep it scientific, it’s best to eat just one kind of carby food, like wedding cake, so you can note how much you ate and how big of a reaction you experienced. If you nibble here and there, you’ll never really know what was the culprit.
If so, you got bigger problems than getting kicked out of ketosis…
Thank you for the replies which I found really helpful. I’m normally quite strict with carbs and am anticipating some pain after the event but also exercise a lot so hopefully won’t be off thefts burning wagon for long.
