Does anyone here know if a diet of beef patties, eggs, Pistachios and blueberries would be safe long term? I want to do a ketovore diet but am feeling sketchy about any potential pitfalls/ deficiencies.
Ketovore
It depends on your goals? Health? weight?
And what precisely do you mean by safe? Your bio says you were keto for a year and then no longer found it sustainable or beneficial⌠can you be more specific? Also⌠what do your daily carbs look like with the diet youâre suggesting.
Hold on, youâve gots of thoughts headed you way soon.
Hang in there⌠youâll get varied opinions and insights and hopefully something will strike the right chord with you. BUT⌠need more info first.
I want to lower my weight/ inflammation but thatâs not a priority for me. I mostly want to improve my mental health and steer clear of junk food. And what I mean by safe is, will I struggle with deficiencies later on down the line? I believe the reason I didnât find Keto beneficial after a year before is because I was eating a lot of vegetables, oils and âketo treatsâ (essentially dirty keto). If I were to do the ketovore Iâm suggesting, Iâd be getting 25 total carbs per day or 18 net.
Another reason I struggled with keto so much before is because I believe I was low on B vitamins. Ever since I started eating more red meat Iâve been feeling better.
Sounds like you know exactly what went wrong before. It can be an easy fix. Eat real food. Maybe count total carbs, just to be on the safe side, and stay the course. Many of us start out taking supplements like magnesium and salt and D/K and maybe potassium. Many of us find we can give them up later. Some people never take them and do great. And some folks are true believers in the benefits of supplements, maybe especially those who exercise vigorously.
Best of luck. Youâre In the right place for support and insights. We have a varied group with diverse approaches, but youâll find whatâs right for you. Be patient, stay the course and listen to your bodyâs signals. Itâs a process.
You got this.
That would likely be rather high carb. Have you tried putting exactly what you plan to eat into a nutrition tracker like https://cronometer.com/ to see what the numbers come out as?
No, the OP wrote it will be 18g net carb, I am sure there was counting involved.
Itâs all about amounts. One should be careful if prone to eat much of them, thatâs true.
@PuppermintPatty, I have no idea what will happen long term, I do some experiment myself with my on/off carnivore-ish⌠The vast majority of my food is carnivore and the rest is whatever I fancy, mostly fruits (all kinds of, I donât limit myself and I have a fruit garden) but other things too, basically everything but vegs (I eat vegs but the amount is minuscule). I canât depend on carnivore experiences or normal keto experiences with plants as my food choices are too weird but my body is very good at telling me what it wants and itâs the best woe I can do so I am hopefulâŚ
There is clearly no specific research so you can just look at your nutrition intake and it says something but not enough as our actual diet changes our needs, there are individual factors too⌠Beef and eggs should give you everything you need if you eat enough but then carbs may interfere somewhat⌠I really donât know if itâs fine especially for you, I would think my own body would handle it or tell me what to add or take awayâŚ?
So I canât help but probably no one can guarantee it will be all fine. I just donât think it should be bad⌠But some people take supplements even on a proper and good looking carni diet⌠So maybe you will need some anyway?
Would make it around limited to around 100g of each which is really not much and for many an unrealistic amount to limit to.
I would think 100g of each is a pretty generous amount! More can be eaten if one likes them, sure but itâs a decent amount, nothing super tiny like my 5-10g peanuts and 50g fruit (3 different kinds) sometimes (I can go way lower than that despite having some addiction to both)âŚ
It doesnât matter if itâs little for many others, itâs @PuppermintPattyâs diet plan
yes it would be ok but I tell ya, wonât last long termâŚfor whatever your long term meaning kinda is here?
once we box ourselves into ONLY XYZ-----unless that suits our bodies to the ultimate----and I doubt this will for ya only in that WE change as the body heals so we have to adapt eating to do just that.
WHY the extreme?
Can you give some insight why you would want to limit your life to only 4 foods? There HAS to be some reason for this action that I am missing maybe?
So feel ya on âloosey gooseyâ keto. so much âketo brandsâ of crappy stuff for convenience and alot of what ifs I can eat and it gets confusing for many âbut Keto Plan best done is like 20g (total or net) carbs and that is work making that happen on a daily basis when one is âketoâd outâ on processed stuffâŚbeen there, done that and get it!!
Super happy to hear red meat is making ya feel better! Meat protein and animal fat is key to lifeâŚkeep going there and loving it but you have to remember, something like low iodine in the body means ya might crave a bit of shrimp or mussels or sardines etc that give idione but if you wonât eat it then?? Your body might say I donât do well on eggs? hence ya might gotta drop them??
So to me I ask why are you boxing in SO tight now?
whatâs doing with ya??
just a chat, just a conversation -------- something is off for ya and I think you are trying to make a restrictive tough food intake per day some sort of salvation maybe? again donât know here, just guessing!!
but chat out more what is going down for you and we all can chat up some advice thru experience maybe?
The short answer is that youâd probably be okay, as long as the nuts and berries donât trip you up. People can do just fine on an all-meat diet and get all the vitamins and other nutrients they need. I donât know about including pistacchioes and blueberries, however, since many plants contain phytochemicals that inhibit the absorption of certain nutrients. So that might or might not be a concern with that particular nut and that particular berry.
I think Karen (@Fangs) is on the right track. You merely need to think things through a bit more. The only concern I would have with your proposal is simply that a lot of people find it all too easy to overdo nuts and berries, while others would complain that they could never eat just ground meat at all their meals.
Myself, I would be okay with the ground meat but would probably not be able to limit myself with the nuts and berries. What the ketonians tend to do in my house is to eat various kinds of meat and fish, plus a salad or some keto-friendly vegetable, such as broccoli in cheese sauce, or a cauliflower casserole loaded with bacon and cream. (Of course, the challenge is to avoid the carb-laden foods we have to prepare for the non-ketonians in the house.) So if we were able to get rid of the vegetables altogether, we would still have a variety of foods to keep interest alive.
Now, even before I went keto, I used to roast a pork shoulder (picnic) and live off it for a week, eating almost nothing else, so I suspect that I wouldnât need all that much variety if I were to go full carnivore. But everyone is different here.
I would be sick of eggs and beef in less than a month. The nuts and berries arenât enough to offset that, so I think you are setting yourself up to fail.
You have identified the issue - âdirty ketoâ - but your solution is very extreme. Maybe that is what it would take for you to get back on the keto wagon, but I would certainly plan on expanding your menu beyond 4 foods at some point. Just make sure they are real foods, not junk.
Not necessarily. Some people are fine with beef aloneâŚ
I need variety but I probably could live on eggs and pork, I would have hardships but isât a GREAT combo. I just like to add things (and that often makes things worse nowadays). Still wouldnât be too bad for a while. Or maybe yes, I never tried it, after all. But it sounds better than my original keto⌠For the current me, not the me back then.
I never could live on beef and eggs alone, I think. Beef is nice once in a blue moon but not my lovely, tender pork :D. But itâs great for others.
We donât know how long term this plan is. And maybe itâs something to try to and tweak if problems arise?
I like experiments, I surely will have odder ideas (for very, very long time and I keep the right to add anything any time, I just try not to). I never made it stricter than âeggs and meatâ but I need very much variety on any woe⌠While others not so much.
@PuppermintPatty, now I am curious what happens if you try this Will you get bored quickly as I did with carnivore (with spices, condiments, all dairy and whatnot. I still got bored quickly but it was long ago when I wasnât used to eating meat)? Will you find your plant items in the plant amounts too little, too much, just perfect?
Itâs quite fine to test something and tweak a bit laterâŚ
true - everyone is different and I am filtering through my own failed experiments with Atkins. Because I limited my foods so much and didnât eat enough fat (verboten in the 70âs and even 90âs/2000âs when I did it again) it wasnât sustainable for me and I always caved in and went back to carbs.
Keto I can do for life.
No one can only eat 100g of pistachios.
Seriously, nuts are tough for many (like me) to control. As an addition to a meal like a salad or even a dish? Sure. By themselves? No way.
@Janie Ah, Atkins = keto. At least if you arenât concerned with increasing carb count, which I never was.
Iâll echo some other posters. Why are you wanting to limit yourself to 4 foods? There are so so many clean keto foods you could eat that would tick nutrient and keto macro boxes.
Not really because Atkins never told us to increase saturated fats - just keep carbs < 20. I never went beyond the induction phase but w/o the added fats keto promotes I couldnât sustain it long term. This was the 70âs where we were brainwashed into thinking fats were evil and fake margarine would save us all.
I never ate nuts until an adult and can still eat a spoonful and be done, so nuts for me are not a trigger food I overeat. Same with peanut butter. I can scoop up a large spoonful and eat it and be satisfied.
Potatoes are my kryptonite. I cannot eat a spoonful or a handful and walk away. So I donât except on rare occasions and control the portions ahead of time.
IDK aboput pistachios but I have a peanut addiction.
I still can eat 0.3g of it, it took a long time and carnivore helped a lot but I feel 0.3g (I counted it today, thatâs a small half peanut, the smallest piece not counting torn ones) way more generous than just smelling them
I used to eat 100g peanuts (in a few minutes) and probably even more but I need some careless wild crazy day to go over 10g nowadays. 5g is my normal portion, though and sometimes the mentioned 0.3g.
I tried to implement a rule that I only use peanuts in dishes but of course I canât do that with my light peanut addiction and a big peanut jar in the kitchen all the time.
Itâs good I have carni times because I obviously donât eat peanuts then and itâs even easyâŚ
Roasted, salted, crunchy peanuts are still amazing
For some reason I canât snack on normal nuts. I love walnuts but they are for cakes (especially pancakes, my favorite pancake has walnut in it, ruining the carnivoreness of the dish but itâs still awesome and keto :D).
But keto only says to eat little enough carbs, thatâs itâŚ
They arenât the same, sure, I remember some impossibly (for me) strict induction phase where I couldnât have eaten almost anything while being a vegetarianâŚ?
And then Atkins raises carbs
I prefer a simpler woe where the rules donât change all the time.
Or if they do, they are MY own personal rules finetuned to my actual views and mood
I am basically agree with you guys, itâs probably not NEEDED to restrict ourselves this much but itâs a simple idea and why not to try for a while? Changes may come later.
I still think 2 items should be enough for a while even for a variety loving one like me⌠I will test it in September (Not for the whole September, I love my dairy too much for that but can live without for a while, I already tested it.)
I still canât comprehend it⌠People here ate pork fat for breakfast (cereal was nowhere in the 70s, not like I can imagine normal people considering it food), of course with bread (and often booze too, the business involving tiny 0.5dl bottles was and is and will be big)⌠Now there is something against fat (and meat) but people in general donât care. Fat is just too tasty and traditional I suppose. And in the last decades they brought back Mangalica, itâs a pig raised for its fat, mostly (there are âmeat pigâ and âfat pigâ breeds, itâs totally the latter. pretty breed with curly fur, a traditional Hungarian one :)) so I am hopeful regarding the future too. Itâs no big deal that the supermarkets have vegan meat substitutes and âlight pork chopsâ⌠Each to their own. As long as I easily can buy pork between anywhere between 5 and 80% fat too, itâs fine with me.
