A few weeks ago I treated myself to a keto breathalyser gadget after months of using keto sticks. After several weeks of daily measuring, apparently I’m only ever in keto in the afternoons and evenings (optimal, between 0.02 and 0.08). First thing in the morning it’s always 0.0. And I know they say the reading first thing is the most reliable. My question, is this common? Do I just need to get deeper into ketosis? I have been drinking wine at the weekends. Thanks!
Ketosis only in the evenings
A breathalyzer measures acetone, a by-product of ketones being burned. When you are sleeping your metabolism is slower and you might not be burning ketones at a rate sufficient to get a reading even if you have a significant level of blood ketones. Also many experience a dawn effect where the body produces cortisol to get ones blood sugar up as a way of providing more energy to get one up and going. Elevated blood sugar whether it comes from food or the body’s natural processes will inhibit fat and ketone metabolism.
Instead of measuring first thing in the morning, first go for a walk or do a little exercise to burn off that morning sugar and start burning some fat and ketones.
My KETO HEALTHCARE breathalyzer is inconsistent with my Ketonix. That you are mentioning readings of .02 & .08 makes me believe you might have a subpar unit as well. I Just recieved my Ketonix from having had it readjusted and calibrated again. I can have a reading of 60 PPM ( parts per million) which is considered a fairly deep state of ketosis while the keto healthcare says .05…not even .5. Also I cannot find what the scale is a measurement of…08 of what concentration?
To read more about acetone as a ketone try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetoacetate_decarboxylase
Or just look at the Ketonix site or https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/oby.21242
I always get very low or negative readings until late afternoon but by 5 pm I’m usually getting readings of 4 to 8 mmol. I’ve stopped ever even wasting my time on early measurements.
Totally normal, even optimal. It means you’re burning all ketones produced until the Afternoon. Excellent for fat loss!
