Ketosis confusion

Hey yall.

This is more of a help me understand than help me. So last weekend when I had a glass of wine, sure enough my ketone production stopped. As shown by “lo” on my blood meter. By the next morning they were back at 1.0. My question is, what’s the difference between ketone production pausing and being kicked out of ketosis from eating too many carbs? Is it just the time it takes to start producing again?

Thanks for reading!

My understanding is that alcohol is a very temporary thing. Your body prioritizes metastasizing the alcohol over producing ketones. It will go right back to producing ketones once the alcohol is out of your system.

If getting kicked out of ketosis due to too many carbs, it will depend on how fat adapted one is how fast they can get back in. Some will have no problem with it, while others may take a few days of strict Keto if they weren’t yet fat adapted.

At least that’s my understanding.

Thanks helpful…thanks! It would appear its a matter how long you’ve been on keto, a factor i did not consider.

I’m just guessing here, but getting kicked out of ketosis probably means that you basically refilled your cells’ glycogen stores to some extent. The rise in insulin that would have accompanied it puts you in fat storage mode and makes you hungry. That continues until you use up all that glucose. Aside from the hunger and fat storage, I guess it works similarly to the alcohol in that you have to wait until it clears your system. It just takes longer.

That makes sense to me. I had not thought about the glycogen stores.
