Ketosis and High Energy Lifestyle?

(Ollie Ewin) #1

Hi, I’m 22 and live a high energy lifestyle, get up early do High Intensity workouts, achieving my goals all day, sometimes staying up late. On a physiological level I’ll be explosive with the muscles, there will be many periods of prolonged stress. I’m not at the stage of my life where I want to limit my energy in any way. Of course I balance with good rest and sleep and recovery but it’s not always guaranteed to be perfect.

I understand you need to chill while adapting but can i live a high energy lifestyle while staying in ketosis?

Thanks for any help,

Ollie

I don’t see why you couldn’t live a high energy lifestyle while practicing the ketogenic lifestyle. There are some high profile celebs and high level MMA fighters that are ketogenic.

Joe Rogan is ketogenic and promotes this way of eating.
Jocko Wilink (retired navy seal, black belt jujitsu, and super active person) hasn’t said outright he is ketogenic but he said he is low carb, high fat.
Meisha Tate (Retired MMA UFC Women Former 135lb champion) - is ketogenic and has talked about the ketogenic diet on Joe Rogan Podcast.
Brian Caraway (MMA UFC Top 10 135lb fighter) - is on the ketogenic diet
Brendan Shaub (Retired MMA/UFC Heavy Weight now podcaster) - is keto and used to call himself “The Keto Kid”
Kyle Kingsbury (MMA UFC fighter)
Matt Brown (MMA UFC 170lb) - Talked about switching to the ketogenic diet on his podcast

I’m sure there are other high level athletes on the ketogenic diets, but I follow MMA closely, so I am able to give more examples of them.

Great thankyou. I’m asking as I have had trouble adapting for quite a while, and keep getting kicked out. Is it just a matter of relaxing for maybe even a month or longer. But eventually I can go back to going all out again?

I have read that the first few weeks of keto you will notice a decrease in energy. After you become fat adapted performance comes back. I am not the best to speak on this, as I lead a sedentary lifestyle. Maybe someone from the forums that is very active will chime in to give you better feedback on this.

Exercising/activity won’t knock you out of ketosis, but you will experience a period of having less energy than normal. You’re effectively rewiring your body’s method of storing/using energy. It takes a while to adapt to that. Once you do though, you’ll find that you’ll have a ton of energy to spare, and can easily push yourself harder than before. It almost feels like a super power!

Unfortunately, there’s no specific period of time that it takes to become fat adapted, but being young and active should help speed things up. I’d say expect a month, but don’t give up if it takes longer. Your body will eventually sort everything out.

Thank you for your reply! How is your muscle glycogen retention too? How does it compare to when you were eating carbs? Are you feeling full or chronically depleted?

I did notice a decrease during the first two to three weeks, but only beause I was carb-detoxing hard. Talk about a massive case of the keto flu.

Once I got over that, I was the happy recipient of ALL OF THE ENERGY IN THE WHOLE WORLD!

I’m more active now than I was before.
