Ketoscan mini reading of 69 ketoacidosis

I have a ketoscan mini and whenever I am fasting or my keto is in full swing the reading goes up into the 50 / 60s and the app warns me to go to the hospital because I have ketoacidosis! This panicked me the first time so I got my uncle who is a type one diabetic to test my blood sugar and it was fine. Does anyone else have experience with the ketoscan mini who have had a similar experience?

Breath analyzers are not particularly a good indicator of ketone levels, because the ketones being measured have been excreted. I guess the theory behind the warning is that for excreted ketones to get so high, the person must also have a high serum ketone reading, which may or may not be the case.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is diagnosed by taking your serum β-hydroxybutyrate in conjunction with your serum glucose. Both are generally elevated. Diabetic ketoacidosis is generally a concern when serum β-hydroxybutyrate reaches 10 mmol/L, but symptoms don’t generally appear until 20 mmol/L. If your pancreas is still producing insulin, you do not have to worry about diabetic ketoacidosis.

There is a phenomenon known as “euglycaemic ketoacidosis,” in which serum glucose remains normal while serum β-hydroxybutyrate rises, but unless you are a pregnant or lactating woman who is trying to fast, or your doctor has you on an SGLT2 inhibitor for your cholesterol, you do not need to worry about this, either. I am guessing from your name that you do not fall into the former category; however, should you be taking an SGLT2 inhibitor, your doctor should have warned you about the risk of euglycaemic ketoacidosis, and you should be heading the warnings from your device and seeking treatment.

Though I just listened to this:

He implies that blood and breath ketones track well, though there’s a delay between blood then breath ketones. Here’s their study:

Point # 1, 2, and 3. If you’re not an out of control diabetic you will NOT enter a state of ketoacidosis. We have many checks and balances to stop that from happening.

Also, even if you WERE… breath can’t determine that. Only a blood test. To add to that, testing your blood sugar also couldn’t tell you if you were in ketoacidosis, you need to test your ketone levels for that. You’ve been a victim of fad marketing, eat keto, don’t worry about it.

I have zero knowledge about your question. Just wanted to say I love your profile pic.
