Ketonix while fasting not registering

Not sure if this is the right category. I’ve had a Ketonix since February and know how to use it. Haven’t used it in the last month or so, but being that I’m doing an extended fast, decided to see what my ketone levels were. I started the fast after dessert Sunday night. I’m pretty good on my keto, but the past weekend had too many carbs, which is why I decided it was time to fast. Starting Tuesday I tried testing and blew a 0.0. Wednesday, same thing. Thursday I did a calibration and afterwards got a 1.1. I emailed Ketonix support to see if they had any ideas, but I haven’t gotten a response yet. Tested it by holding it over a bottle of nail polish remover and it took a little time but eventually got up to 90, so it seems the sensor works. Doing some research I found a post on their website saying to leave it plugged in overnight, then unplug for 10 minutes, plug it back in a calibrate it. After that got a 1.7. Did that sequence again today, and at the 161 hour point with nothing but water and salt, still just getting a 1.7. On the plus side I’m down 15 lbs from 235 to 220 this morning.

Anyone have any ideas? My wife seems to think it’s a scam, but like I said, I’ve gotten readings in the green in the past. Oh, and for the record, this is a 2017 red version (not bluetooth), and I’ve tried it with v2.4.4 and v2.5 on 2 Macs and a Windows 10 machine.

I know nothing about Ketonix. But, I do know something about ketones from my experience. They’re almost impossible to predict, are sometimes at counterintuitive (frustrating!) levels, and are impacted by many things such as time of day and hormones. I would keep testing and see what the levels are.

And if you’re fat adapted, won’t you be spilling less ketones into your breath because you’re using them more efficiently? I know that’s how it works with the blood meters.

Sometimes it takes a while to get back into ketosis after kicking yourself out with diet… Be patient. And great job on the 15 lbs.

Hope that’s all it is. As long as the weight keeps coming off, I’ll be happy.

And for the curious, I don’t have a goal on number of days for the fast. I’ve done a 3, 5 and 10 day in the past. I’d like to get under 200 before stopping, but that all depends on how I’m feeling.

Upon closer read, I’m with @justme on this one. I missed the too many carbs part, so you’re likely not fat adapted. I think it’s just a matter of time, as Linda said. KCKO!

I’ve been keto since November, so it was just one bad meal. I am fat adapted at this point.

Oh, then in that case, that meal/day didn’t hurt you. I’m back with me on this one. I’d chalk it up to fickle ketones, KCKO, and keep testing.

I appreciate the feedback. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s the sensor not working right or if I really am not in ketosis. That would be weird not eating going on 7 days, but maybe I have too much glycogen built up that needs burnt through first. I just think it’s odd that the Ketonix instructions tell you that if you haven’t used it in a while you may need to re-calibrate it. I wonder what in it needs calibrated?

Right. That’s a head scratcher. I’d think you’d be higher on the ketones at this point, too (despite what I say above - I’d think such a lengthy fast would put you well into the 3+ range.) And, you nail-polish tested it so the sensor is working to some degree, it seems. And you calibrated it more than once? Again, a head scratcher. Hopefully ketonix gets back to you.

What time of day did you blow your 1.7’s? Morning? Dawn phenomenon?

P.S. if you’ve had nothing but water and salt for 7 days, and have lost weight, I absolutely guarantee you’re in ketosis. I wouldn’t even question that

Agree, and that’s what prompted the post
