Ketonix reading and steroid cream

#1

My husband and I have come across something that has us stumped. He has been fasting since Tuesday evening (water and tea only, so about 60 hours). His Ketonix readings both mornings have been less than 2, which is abnormal for him. (Mine was over 11, so I know the device is working…) The only change has been the application of a topical steroid cream for some nagging eczema. Is it possible that the cream has kicked him out of ketosis? Could he still be burning fat and the cream is messing up the Ketonix reading? What gives??

I did a 16 day water only fast that I finished up about 2 weeks ago, and my Ketonix never read more than 2.0, and a lot of times at 0!! I contacted support, and because they are so slow to respond, took forever for them to figure out that it was working properly. My wife could blow about 4, but even without taking in anything but water for over 2 weeks, it wouldn’t register a thing for me. Once I began eating again, the needle started moving again. From my experience, the cream has nothing to do with it.

Steriods are also called glucocorticoids. They can definitely have an effect blood sugars making them rise. I was tested previously for a condition called Cushing’s which can be your body over secrete glucocorticoids. ACTH hormone from tumors in the pituitary which leads the adrenals to over secretion of cortisol or adrenal tumors that over secret themselves. It can also be from taking long term steriod medication. Long story short I would definitely say it could be a factor and could kick him out of Ketosis as the more blood sugar, the more insulin. The more insulin the less likely there is to be ketones.
