Ketones too high

(Susan Lawrence) #1

I started to feel like I was going to pass out this morning after breakfast, which I don’t usually eat.
I assumed my glucose tanked for some reason, so I tested it, but it was at 80. So I tested ketones and they were at 5.2. I know a 1:1 ratio is supposed to be ideal, especially for aging, the real reason I’m doing keto. But this is less than 1. I’ve been running just higher than 1 to 1.
Has this happened to anyone? Why do you think this happened?
(I felt like passing out one other time when I ate breakfast, but I didn’t have a meter with me)

Transient episodes of lightheadedness could be triggered by low BP. Could also be triggered by electrolyte deficiency. Try increasing your salt intake. So long as it passes fairly quickly and you otherwise feel well, it’s probably nothing to worry about.

I have inherited very low BP and had episodes of this on and off for all of my life. So for me it would be a BP item but if it weren’t that I’d look at everything in general - water, salt, magnesium, potassium. Don’t know how long you’ve been at Keto but those numbers vary greatly and really just mean you’re “leaking ketones” which is good but the goal is fat adapted. I know I’ve just recently gotten into a state of fat adapted so I’ve not checked for ketones in at least two weeks. If you’re feeling good generally, then it might be something very temporary, part of the transition.

Here is some good, general information about ketones and ketosis. I found it helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback. I’ve been in keto almost 7 months now. I feel fantastic! Lots of energy and mental clarity. I believe I’ve been fat adapted for some time now.
I actually fainted a couple of times due to low blood pressure but that was years ago and mine is really not low now it’s just normal.
As this happened only two times my solution for now is just not eat breakfast for a while. It’s quite unusual for me to be hungry in the morning.
