Ketones Testing Tech - UK

(Alex ) #1

Can any of my UK friends recommend something cost effective and accurate to use for testing blood ketone levels - having a look on Amazon and the kits seem to range from £20-£200 - ideally something tried and tested.

Would like to start monitoring levels with a bit more preciseness.

thanks in advance!

was looking at this? is this the right piece of kit - or not?!?! completely baffled?

Nope thats for testing blood glucose levels not ketones
You might want to look at this

Ketone strips in the UK are usually £1 or more so 50 strips for sub £40 with a free meter is a pretty good deal.

Edit to add its the one I use…

ta @MarkGossage - was just looking at a similar one actually… shall investigate when payday has arrived…

I’ve yet to find anything cheaper…
I used to use this one
http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/caresens-dual-blood-glucose-and-ketone-meter/
but the strips are more expensive…and harder to come by

interesting! what are some average readings for you then in different scenarios? just so I have a mental benchmark?

For example when you exercise, fast, eat, take MCT oil etc??

(Alex ) #7

(completely new to this)

(bulkbiker) #8

Ok so …

Never use MCT oil can’t see the point

Fasting have been up to 7.0 mmol/l on day 5 of a 7 day fast (highest ever)

Did beef only January one meal a day and averaged 1.8 mmol/l Jan 2019 highest 3.3 mmol/l (so much for too much protein pushing us out of ketosis!)

Exercise… hmmm don’t really do it apart from walking the dog…

Usual day between 0.5 and 1.5 mmol/l mainly carnivore for the past 8 months.

Does that help… I’m 57 years old around 200-210 pounds (it varies)

Ex T2 diabetic so probably not quite as metabolically healthy as a young pup like yourself.

Very helpful mate yeah! Cheers.

This stuff intrigues me, I’m thinking I need to at least have a sort of idea scientifically where I’m at with my progress, rather than the “pissing in the wind approach” I’ve taken over the last 6 months.

Young pup! I wish…

I’ve got quite a lot of my own data… spreadsheet nerd …so if there’s anything I can help with just ask.
Been keto for just over 3 years…

Have u felt having the results helping u in anyway apart from mental reinforcement? Any highs or dips that made u figure out something new ? Thinking of getting one myself but looking for more reasons to justify it. I was planning on testing possible differences with dairy off/on, sweetners off/on etc…

Hi, I have been using a freestyle optimum neo for the last few years.
I got it as s starter kit on eBay for less than 20quid. It’s been reliable and easy to use.
I buy strips from eBay too, packs of glucose strips are dead cheap for 50, maybe around 10 to 15 quid? It’s been a while since a bought some.
The ketone strips are usually 10 to 14 ish for 10 strips depending on the seller.
Both easy to get
I don’t use it nearly as much as I used to but I think it was useful for a bit of feedback and insight to how I reacted to food.
I doesn’t help to get hung up on it though.
Hope that helps

As I said I’m a bit of a data nerd so do a fair bit of testing… I like to have some evidence that things are working so yes I get a fair bit of re-inforcement from the numbers.

On Call GK Duo.

(Allie) #15

On-Call Dual Glucose & Ketone Meter + 25 Blood Ketone Test Strips + 50 Blood Glucose Test Strips + 100 Lancets & Auto-lancer https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013C3G35C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_E3hxCbJ35TX2A

This is the kit I started with and I’ve found a seller on eBay where I can get 50 ketone strips and 50 glucose strips for £52.

(Alex ) #16

Seems like a lot of dough! Do your readings correlate with how you’re feeling Allie? As in, high levels, feel better?

(Allie) #17

Yeah they seem pretty accurate based on how I’m feeling when I test. The test strips are the cheapest I’ve ever found.
