Ketones levels

#1

Hi I’ve been in ketosis for 2 weeks now and feeling great, but today I tested my ketones level with the pee strip and I’m at the highest color 16 mmol is this something to worry about? I’m feeling a little sick today as well so may forgo my speed 40 min walk or do you think it will help me feel better to stay active? I am not diabetic.

So-called ‘pee sticks’ measure excreted, unused ketones (acetoacetate mostly). When you first start eating keto, your metabolism often produces more ketones than your cells and organs yet know what to do with. So you excrete most of them. That’s all you’re measuring. Things will normalize over time such that ketone synthesis will match utilization more closely. Stay sub-20 grams of carbs per day to remain in ketosis as consistently as you can and ketones will take care of themselves.

Great, I’ve been keeping my macros at below 20 carbs, 70-75% fat and 18-25 protein haven’t lost .ire than 2 lbs so far but feel the fat is melting away…sticking to the course

The urine strips are designed to warn Type I diabetics about the possible imminent risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. As long as your pancreas is still producing insulin, that is not a concern.

Furthermore, the strips are not all that accurate, and there is considerable variation in their precision from batch to batch.

But at two weeks into ketogenic eating, I wouldn’t particularly worry. Just keep your carbohydrate intake low, and you’ll be fine.

That may be the result of an electrolyte issue? Sometimes known as “the keto flu”.

I would ask if you’re staying adequately hydrated and consuming enough salt. Extremely high urine ketones and feeling sick could be dehydration. Make sure you’re getting enough salt especially starting out when your trying to avoid electrolyte imbalance (keto flu). :cowboy_hat_face:
