Ketone Levels 3+... Okay, or Not Okay?

(Alison) #1

Hey there - I’ve been my checking Ketone Levels regularly (blood test) and usually they are 3.5, 3.4, 3.7… every once in a while I’ll catch them at a lower level. I’ve read in several places that .5 to 3.0 is optimal, and above 3.0 indicates ‘starving’. Really?

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this, is this totally ‘fine’ or something I need to ‘adjust’?

Thank you, and Happy Weekend!

If you’re not a Type 1, diabetic, you’re fine. Phinney/Volek’s use of the term “starvation ketosis” above 3.0is unfortunate, and confusing. The point I think they really wanted to make is that .5-3.0 is optimal, and 4 isn’t better than 3, and 5 isn’t better than 4. In other words, don’t chase ketones.

I’d KCKO and not worry. :+1:t2:

Hi Brian, Thank you! This sounds good, I’m going with it… and I think this would be a really long thread if there was disagreement  Thanks so much!

My pleasure. Hey, I hit an 8.1 on my meter one time!

Thankfully, I was reading the 1.8 upside down!
