This post is not going to talk about the Ketogenic WOE, except that I thought this article was quite interesting, knowing that the keto diet has been shown to decrease/heal inflammation. So, here you go:
Ketogenic diet and inflammation
Well this advice isn’t horrid:
Diet — Eliminate processed foods, especially sugar and refined carbohydrates which may increase inflammation in the body. Eat plenty of natural foods including fruits and vegetables, pastured animal products and eggs and wild fish.
As long as the fruits are berries, it could be a prescription for keto. Notice it doesn’t mention whole grains? And it says pastured animal products & eggs. A step in the right direction.
Very interesting article. I was surprised by how many KetoCon speakers mentioned (if not did their entire talk on) how much low-carbing has helped their depression. The inflammation angle could well be the reason.
KetoCon, wish I had been there. I would love to go to the next if at all possible.
I have noticed quite a few keto folks have mentioned a lifting of depression with this WOE, and that is why this article jumped out at me. I know it is considered or proven to be anti-inflammatory as well, which is also why I suspect that my psoriasis has been so much better with Keto.
I had a very interesting moment reading this article, becoming very depressed and emotional. It’s probably because the article hit on a lot of what’s going on in my life right now, with the stress of moving and so on. I’ve been depressed most of my life, and have been taking an antidepressant for the past seventeen years.
While it’s tempting to take this article at face value, I think I’d like to see the research about this supposed link between inflammation and depression. From the way they were describing it, it’s an association, and causality hasn’t been established yet.
On the other hand, I’ve come across a number of posts on the forums about keto helping with depression, so this could well be the reason for it. It would be nice to get off my antidepressant, that’s for sure.
I hear your pain Paul, depression is like a monster that haunts the living…
There was a comment regarding the likelihood of causation "“In experimental medicine studies if you treat a healthy individual with an inflammatory drug, like interferon, a substantial percentage of those people will become depressed. So we think there is good enough evidence for a causal effect.” -Prof. Ed Bullmore
It would be a miracle to come off of the antidepressants. Medicine can be a life-saver and a menace beyond our comprehension. Truly seem to be a double edged sword since we really know so much less than we think we do about the human biology/physiology/neurology…just amazingly complex!
I didn’t actually go; I attended a streaming party weekend, and we watched the whole thing on TV. I would imagine that they’ll make the sessions available online at some point. The talk Carrie Brown did on her battles with depression was especially powerful.
I enjoyed KetoCon, but Low-Carb Breckenridge this year was better (and much cheaper to stream).
The conference for next year is already scheduled for early March. Many speakers from KetoCon will be there (plus more, like the Dudes, I would think). Can’t wait!
@Helewisa I have a friend with Psoriasis. I have shown him information concerning diet and his condition and he thinks something is there but not enough for him to make the switch ( so he says). Do you have a list of some pretty good links in this regard or your go to sites (besides here, natch!)
Thank you for this information, I’d love to live stream these, because I live so “far out” that travel is expensive also. What a good opportunity.
I am so new to really, finally “getting” Keto, that I could use all of the information and community support that is available.
Thanks
Actually, I have only heard various podcasts, youtube messages and read some here and there regarding the anti-inflammatory benefits of a ketogenic diet. As for any specific journal or video…I don’t have one to point to off hand. But I could try a search…I’m just exhausted!
here’s a few links though…

Thanks for the info. I have looked into it somewhat frequently. He is a guy I sorta sponsor in a different program and it would be neat to have another keto friend in that other way of life.
