Ketogenic Cough Drops

(John Somsky aka KetoGrinder) #1

I have a severe gag reflex and find menthol cough drops are the only item that helps to alleviate the problem. I currently use the GoLightly sugar fee cough drops that are sweetened with sucralose. I’ve had some trouble getting into ketosis and fear that the cough drops may be the culprit. I probably consume between 10-15 per day. (Each cough drop has 4 g of Sugar Alcohol).

Does anyone know of a more keto friendly cough drop? Am I correct in thinking that 40-60 grams of sucralose based sugar alcohol may be keeping me from ketosis?

My husband had to find an alternative to cough drops too. He now puts a drop of peppermint oil in his drinking water, because he read about it somewhere. Anyway, it works for him. No more cough drops.

Holy crap, you have that many cough drops every day of your life??
I don’t have a solution for you, but you definitely have my sympathy for your condition. That sounds rough. Nothing else to be done, like maybe you’re allergic to something that’s affecting your esophagus? My buddy has Eosinophilic esophagitis and he can choke on stuff at the drop of a hat. Found out black pepper was one of his big triggers.

It might be helpful for you to have an ENT consult to see if you can treat the underlying problem that’s causing the gag instead of the symptom. If it’s not allergy or some sort of post nasal drip causing the reflex an OT or speech pathologist may be able to help with treatments that reduce the gag sensitivity which might be neurological in nature.

Hope you find a solution!

I’ve been to 6 different doctors and none has been able to find an answer to my problem. Thus far cough drops have been my only solution. On the good side tonight I tested my blood for ketones and registered a 0.6. Low but at least something.

I have no solution, but my grandpa has the same problem. I do as well, but to a lesser extent. My grandpa has to have a cough drop in his mouth almost constantly. :frowning: I hope you’re able to find some relief.

I found these, sweetened with Isomalt. It’s a sugar alcohol but I’m assuming it’s probably not a “good” one or I would have heard about it. Not to mention at several a day, that will get pricey.

What about slippery Elm Drops? I will have to go find mine and see if they have carbs as binders.

**dextrose and sucrose…oh well

I too just realized that the cough drops I’ve been using for a few days have 4 carbs in each one!

Not using those anymore.

Even the brand that is mentioned below, Olbas - have 2 carbs per lozenge. Unfortunately!

I don’t need as many cough drops as I used to. But I found some xylitol cough drops that seem ok.

Have you tried making your own? There is a recipe out there using coconut oil, honey and essential oils. I bet you could skip the honey and just go with coconut oil and essential oils. Might be worth a try.
