A friend of mine is going keto and hates coconut. What is a good substitute for MCT oil?
Keto without Coconut
She won’t taste any coconut in mct or coconut oil…tastes like any light vegetable oil. I also use olive and avocado oil–which do have heavier flavors.I
If use caution with other vegetable oils though–high in polyunsaturated fats which is not ideal. Better to have monounsaturated or saturated fat.
I have totally eliminated all coconut from my life for now, and I use Organic extra virgin olive oil and avocado mayonnaise for dressings, cooking, sauces, and I bought butter for the first time on Friday night, but I haven’t used any yet. You don’t need to use coconut products at all on Keto if you don’t want to =).
Not all MCT oils are derived from coconut oil. That said, I don’t think that my MCT oil or refined, liquid coconut oil taste at all like coconut. Just stay away from virgin or unrefined coconut oils.
I mostly use a light tasting (read refined) olive oil or avocado oil. I also use my saved bacon grease and butter for sautéing.
I only eliminated it because it was making me feel sick and making me not lose weight… not because I didn’t like the taste =).
I’m going to be the voice of dissent here - I can absolutely taste the flavor of coconut in coconut oil. that said, I use little to no coconut products and I’ve been keto for 3 mo - if you don’t like it it’s easy to avoid and doesn’t impact my woe at all.
There are basically two kinds of coconut oil - unrefined (tastes very much of coconut) and refined (tastes of basically nothing). I hate the taste of coconut, but I’m completely okay with the refined (cold expeller-pressed, not chemically refined) coconut oil.
And of course MCT oil doesn’t taste of coconut at all - again, it tastes of basically nothing. @Toadslayer, your friend should be fine with MCT … assuming they can deal with all the other possible side-effects of MCT (which is why I don’t touch it, lol).
ahhhh, got it. I can only buy unrefined where I am so mine tastes like coconut. And I only know that because I considered doing a fat fast with coconut oil. until I tried eating some. Not doing that again.
Nope… still completely unnecessary… there are no dietary essential MCT oils… just the ones our body can make.
I’m glad that’s your experience. That doesn’t mean that people with other underlying health issues might not find them literally lifesaving. Not everyone’s metabolism is healthy and strong. Supplementing is very useful for me. I think it’s unlikely that I’m the only one. I want others to know it might be a useful experiment to see if it helps. Your stance doesn’t seem to leave room for those with a different experience. So, I’m speaking up.
