Keto with ECC

#1

I was told that subtracting the fiber from the carbs didn’t work with keto. Protein Power says it’s ok. Please offer more opinions.

My plan (prescribed by my doctor) says 20 whole carbs per day (not net). The reason for 20 whole carbs is because you are pretty much guaranteed to be in ketosis with that level.

If you mean counting the net carbs vs. total carbs…good advice I received in the past is that it is fine to count net carbs for whole real foods (apples, berries etc.) but you should not for any form of processed foods because they play label games and their very refined fiber (essentially powder) isn’t comparable to natural bulky fiber.

For example - 3 “peanut butter brownie smash” quest bars a day by net carbs fits within 20 grams of carbs. I personally think having one of those near a fatty keto meal is bound to get insulin up and fat storage going.

Most non-USA labels already have fiber subtracted out. Their “Carbohydrates” line on a label only counts digestible carbs. I see no reason to count any carbs that aren’t digestible, so I subtract fiber and some portion of sugar alcohols, depending on the type of sugar alcohol (some still have a digestible component).

I’m Australian so i don’t have to worry about fibre on labels, it’s already deducted from the total carbs.

I have no idea who “Power Protein” is, but, remember our focus is Low Carb, High Fat, and moderate your protein.

Dr. Westman advocates you should count total, and not net, carbs. Net carbs is essentially a marketing ploy. Stick to total, stick to 20 grams.
